If I remember correctly, he quit because of creative difference and wanted the second mini-series to be similiar to his last book, V:The Second Generation. So the series did survive without him. That said, I don't mind seeing a reboot of V, but I am not look for a family drama bullshit. I am also not looking for them to create new character and just steal storylines from the original (the storyline described is similiar to the Mike/Sean father/son subplot). If they can do more of Battlestar Galatic type of reboot than a Bionic Woman or Knight Rider reboot, then I will be on board. Otherwise, they should just make a feature film or two and go big budget.

if you read the variety article closely, you will notice that there is another executive producer teamed up with scott peters. It is a guy named jace hall. I looked him up imdb and it is JASON HALL the guy who started MONOLITH!! Dude, this guy has made some of the best games I've ever played. SHOGO, BLOOD, ALIENS VS. PREDATOR 2, TRON 2.0, F.E.A.R., CONDEMNED. It's all top rated shit, and Monolith is known for their awesome highly rated narrative games and storytelling. it is hard for me to believe that this guy would be involved in a tv show like this and it would come out badly or be unoriginal. his track record with games is pretty top notch for the most part. also i found this internet show he does called thejacehallshow and in it he has Gary Graham which tells me something is up with Ken Johnson on this because Gary Graham was the lead detective in ALIEN NATION and Ken Johnson did that show. so jace hall must know ken johnson and ken johnson must know about this project or be a part of it in some way. i dunno, there is def a connection. i just think that this jace hall exec producer guy is making this a little more interesting. i am a fan of the games he does. they are pretty deep. this could be really good or at least different. i'm skepticallly optimistic.

I remember the fanboy fury six years ago when the remake of Battlestar Galactica was announced, not long after Tom DeSanto's continuation project fell apart. I predict a similar level of fury on the intertubes, though in this instance I feel genuinely sorry for Johnson, who's a good writer and a genuinely nice guy. Still, I liked The 4400 (damn you USA Network!) and I'll still check this out.

Gotta say, I'd be a lot more interested in this if it was a sequel series about a second invasion 25 or 30 years later. Have the reason for the second invasion start out as if it was a diplomatic rescue mission for the now poorly treated Visitors that were left behind after the war, and who had helped the humans in the resistance, only to be rewarded with being put in internement camps and/or treated like second class citizens after the invasion was over, despite their roles in helping humanity win back their planet. So the Visitors agree to leave, a ship comes to get them, but really it turns out to be the spearhead of another Invasion, and a somewhat justified one this time, which muddies the dramatic waters, as many who helped us last time only to be punished and badly treated by humanity for it later are now only to ready for a little payback, while others are torn in their loyalties, and even a large degree of sympathetic humans join the invaders against their own people. That way they could both start over with a fresh story in the same basic concept, as well as bringing back a few classic characters from the previous miniseries and show. Hell, s'what I'd do anyway. Fuck it, hire Ironside and Englund regardless of how you unfold the new V, and I'll probably watch anyway.

the actors were wearing two masks - a lizard mask over a human mask, for those 'claw and shred the face away to reveal lizard skin' shots. They had no way to make the eyes look real, so they had to hide them with massive sunglasses. ... that thinks they should either plan to continue the original series or just push a film project with Disney. Whatever happens, they're still likely going to generate more interest in the original series, so why try a reboot? ABC might be better-off combining some of its own lesser-known 80's genre series in a Disney film project, and releasing DVD's of the original airings. This would work especially well for some of the shows that only lasted one full season. If they grabbed one of the top Marvel writers for the initial story concept (and worked with Marvel on the comic version of the show, along with Toybiz(?) on product tie-ins), they could effectively re-boot some characters which they previously lost money on. For now, I'm just trying to understand why Kenneth Johnson hasn't been able to get studio support for a "V" movie. Does anyone understand what he's been doing wrong?

Ken Johnson's "V: The Second Generation" novel is bad. Really bad. The plot starts with a good idea--those other aliens that Julie tried to contact at the end of the first miniseries finally show up. But his writing is awful. It reads like a script treatment, not a novel. It has paragraphs full of physical description and exposition instead of character development. There are wild swings in perspective, and there's a lack of depth or logic to the world. Maybe it would play better on screen, but on the page, it stank.

And heres why: The unique and interesting thing about V was the story of humans gradually accepting a more and more restrictive/authoritarian government and how people either were willing to go along with that or stand up to it. Once you get to the "aliens in charge" stage, its just another humans v alien film. So to recapture what made V great you have to go back to the start...

V was done in three series. For there was V: the miniseries. Then came V: The Final Battle. Later came V: The Series which went for one season and brought the series to total closure (Apparently "The Final Battle" was anything but that). The fifth column won control of command of the visitors in the end (with help of the resistance), arrested Diana, and left Earth peacefully and forever (Though they left so quickly they couldn't possibly have dropped off all of those captive humans in the process which could have been one feasible thing to build a sequel off of I guess). I would lean towards a redo, but after seeing how Battlestar Gallactica got butchered in its reimagining, I'd be afraid to see how the story here would get trashed as well.

Bad sign since 4400 was shot in Canada. IMO, virtually every American show shot in Canada is low quality crap. And don't make it look like it a Sci-Fi channel original movie.

This is just some trial balloon that ABC sent up for our reaction; I loved the mini-series, and anyone who's seen the last eps of the show that didn't get broadcast knows it went to crap. I'm gonna wait til there's more detail to this.

V:The Final Battle was a V mini-series without Kenneth Johnson and it was still pretty good. Johnson quit that mini-series in the early stages because he did not like the direction NBC wanted to go. If Johnson stayed with project, there wouldn't have been the Ham Tyler character (one of the more popular characters from the series) for example. It is clear that was a character developed after Johnson left the project since he is nowhere to be found in his V:Second Generation book. Not even a mention.

I remember enjoying the V mini-series, but the TV series was really bad. I predict that we will see some kind of role for Marc Singer, but not for Robert England. He went on to do Freddie and he is too big a movie star now to return to television. There may actually be a Freddie v. Jason v. Michael movie. By the way, this will be Canadian made all the way. In the future, all TV shows will be filmed in Canada.

to V: The Final Battle was friggin awesome...its my second fav TV intor music after Twin Peaks....most tv theme tunes these days arent of that atandard....except maybe the Sopranos and Six Feet Under, but they only come marginally close really....maybe Curb-oh and Arrested Developments theme was pretty nifty

... the 2nd mini-series gave us a top-notch character in Ham Tyler, but didn't it also give us that terrible "Starchild uses her magical glowing powers" ending? That was one of the all-time worst rip-off/cheat/cop-out/sell-out /screw-job endings of the genre. I'd rather have seen Elizabeth use a laptop computer to diffuse the doomsday device. And, yes, that's intentionally anachronistic...

the "official" ie Ken Johnson V concept is set 20 years later and basically ignores the non-Ken V shows (The Series and I believe The Final Battle too). So yes, no Ham Tyler (which absolutely was a totally cool character thanx in no small part to Mr Ironside) and also no stupid ass Starchild magical powers - which is exactly what we'll no doubt be getting from BSG btw. Instead we get the answer to our distress call sent out to the OTHER alien race who could kick the Visitors' ass. I guess they're about 20 lightears away? They arrive and we find out that as much as we had to fear from the (non-5th Column) Visitors, these guys are FAR WORSE. I must admit I haven't read the book. From the above description, Ken's writing style sounds a lot like William Gibson's - which is notoriously difficult to adapt to screen. Maybe that's why it's been so hard to greenlight? Regardless, does ANYONE believe ABC's single mother and troubled teen premise sounds BETTER?? Anyone? Anyone? I didn't think so.

I work in development for one of the big studios. The problem is we wanted to do a series of HUGE V movies. But Johnson wanted to direct them. He is younger than McCain but not by much. It wasn't gonna happen. Now he went and fucked himself because this show kills his movie. Dumb bastard.

I felt in a lot of ways the second mini-series was superior to the first, but I do agree that the human/visitor hybrid child and the ending were very weak. It was definitely a cop out ending.

I think the concept of Johnson's V:Second Generation is actually pretty cool idea, but the execution was terrible. The book was not good. I think you can do a movie on it, but I think it would needed to be improved.

However, the original reasons for the Visitor invasion were absurd. Shipping water off Earth is just daft, and shipping people home for food isn't much better. We could just sell them Enceladus and a couple of rabbits, problem solved. Makes more sense just to say they're just a mean bunch of lizard people who conquer planets just for the hell of it. I for one welcome our scaly overlords.

Read it back in Feburary and it wasn't bad. I corresponded with Kenneth Johnson via email around the time the original "V" was released on DVD (he left his address at the end of the commentary) I had asked him what his original vision for "V: TFB" was and it was very much like the book. I agree with an earlier TBer that it would've worked much better on the screen, and I believe that was Johnson's intention all along. Too bad no Ham Tyler, though. He was the only good character to come from the post-Johnson "V" stories.

TVGuy... to this day, I still wonder if the silly Starchild ending was something they came up with on the fly. For such a well-organized show (in 80's terms), that was too bad to put into words... though Maniaq probably said it best. The "new" creators were doing pretty good up until that point. Nomeking... if what you write is true, then that would make sense. Johnson's best bet--- if he insisted on directing--- would've been to get a handle of the exact budget he needed, court a cast that would agree to work at scale, and try to raise a large volume of internet micro-financing. It likely would've taken some time to raise the capital, but it would've been possible. At the same time, he could try to work with a comic company (like a Dark Horse) to give his works new exposure--- thereby boosting his own name--- and subsequently push to have some decision-making power on casting and selecting the director. the later strategy would've likely made more sense, as opposed to strong-arming the very studios known for ignoring most parties that try to strong-arm them.
