For more information on Macross check out the Macross Compendium (http://tinyurl.com/4hsco4) and Macross World (http://tinyurl.com/3tlq64). Also, all 25 episodes of Frontier have been fansubbed and are easy to find.

Fantastic animation budget, great music (background music by Yoko Kanno), fun characters, a ton of action, and references out the yin yang to previous Macross shows. Here's another review with more detail: http://tinyurl.com/45jfth

Anyway, Frontier was awesome. The pacing was a little odd in places, and some things seemed rushed (especially the ending ep), but damn if it didn't pay off in the last ep. So much energy adn excitement, an extremely climatic battle. I know many hated it, but I LOVED the resolution to the love-triangle. Very un-Macross. Still think Klan Klan was the coolest character in the show. Definitely makes my top 5 anime series list. Oh yeah, there's going to be a Frontier movie, too (it's mentioned after the credits on the last ep).

Even when Scott's not the one posting the reviews, this is still one of the best columns online. Good work GodMars. ^_^

Any word on the live action movie? Can't anyone contact WB directly and get the non-HG spin on if the Macross material is available?

Shoji Kawamori has gone on record saying Macross II is not cannon and takes place in an alternate universe.

Studio Nue owns the rights to the designs of SDF Macross, meaning neither Harmony Gold or Warner Bros can make a series or movie (animated or otherwise) using those designs. No SDF-1, no Valkyries, no Destroids.

The international (outside of Japan) rights to the SDF Macross animation and possibly DYRL (because of Tatsunoko's involvement, though someone else may already control those rights). Also, they can make all the toys, comic books, video games, and underwear they want. What they cannot do is use any of the original designs (mecha and characters) in a new production, animated or otherwise.
Macross II is the direct sequel to DYRL

DYRL/ Macross '84 is the theatrical presentation /"retelling" of the "True Story" of the events that occurred in Macross. In other words, it's the movie of Macross, as presented somewhere further down the timeline of Macross, in the Macross Universe, viewed by the same people it portrays as characters,(in retrospect, and with a splash of Hollywood.) Macross II is it's direct follow up, in sequence of release and storyline, however it is not referred to as a "movie". Also, GodMars you are are always explaining these rights issues; where's your page?
The "rights" are as I understand them

The DYRL rights issue is fuzzy at best. There were originally some strong rumors that Frontier was going to be released in NA, but Bandai Entertainment shot that down: "there will never be a Macross Frontier in America".
