Questions for secretcylon ...
by Shan
Sep 1st, 2008
08:34:11 PM
I remember from a previous talkback that you said (as did Aaron Douglas in an interview) that all the guesses for the 5th/final Cylon "were not even close".

As, at various times people have guessed:

Every major character

Every minor character

Every dead character

Characters never seen before

A new character we've never even heard of before

One of the 11 Cylons we've already seen

Inanimate objects (Starbuck's Viper, The Galactica, Pegasus etc)

"Wonderful Gaseous Helium"

Various other answers covering every possible configuration of matter, be it into a live being or other object

It's a trick and there's actually only 11 Cylons

On this basis, how can absolutely no-one be even close?

My second question is about Simon. Why have they always given him so little screen time and are they likely to rectify this in any way by the end of the show - or at the very least in the Cylon centric movie coming out? Currently, I'm sure you could have redistributed his entire role amongst the other eleven? On a related note, will Doral who has all but disappeared get some more time as well?

Finally, any chance that we'll ever see one shot where we have all twelve Cylons in the same place at the same time?

They could do like Tartakovky's Clone Wars

I was a rabid fan... I guess I still am. I was going around with my own DVD-R's of the miniseries when it came on and forcing all my friends and family to watch it, I was that much of a fan. Now, I am just so sick of being teased by these stupid split seasons. It's split up too much to care even.. it's just enough episodes to get you really interested and then... nothing. Pointless and foolish. Does the scifi channel think I will accidently leave the TV on and watch Mansquito, or Mega-Croc VII or something if they continue to do this? What you think you're gaining in the short term, scifi tv execs, you are losing in the long term.. . after BSG was over you would have had a fan hungry for something else, but instead you've drawn this out so long, I'm basically just staying for the end and then I've got a plane to catch.

Let's flush any momentum gained by the mid-season finale completely down the toilet and make people wait an entire year. Wads of money thrown at Ron Moore to re-work the finale so they can do another couple of seasons? The show is still good. Let it go out while it's still good and put this thing down the beginning of next year.

I was a fan of SG and even enjoyed SG:A, but it became clear around the middle of the 3rd season for SG:A that the writers had all gotten Star Trek Writer's syndrome... they had been out of ideas for a year already and don't know how to make a meaningful characters or long lasting story arc. Last season they get freaking Sam Carter into the mix and they can't think of a single thing to write for her? Nothing!? So we had SG== ST:TNG and we have SG:A == ST:DS9 and so now we are literally repeating the pattern by setting up the exact same story arc as ST:Voyager 100 credits says that there is a mysterious alien and a lovable sidekick within the first 4 episodes.

Gotta say, I was extremely late to the party on that. I just watched the whole series on hulu.com, and really wish I watched it before it was cancelled. That show, while not the direct words of god spoken into your ear like some fans would have you think, was a solid Universe with inspired casting and just a wonderful breath of fresh air. I'm actually very disappointed that the show was canceled. I think I've only been more disappointed by Arrested Development getting canceled, which is a funny coincidence since Nathan Fillion bares more than a passing resemblance to Jason Bateman.

They are having trouble securing the rights for Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" for the final sequence. Heck, since they are apparently stealing The Soprano's season schedules, why not steal their ending too?

As much as I love that the cable networks are putting out better programming than a lot of the network shows, I can't stand that they do not adhere to a standard season schedule with huge breaks in between season and even between the first half and second half of a season. It's ridiculous.

You knew there was no way they would not try to stretch it out as long as possible. This is the network that brings us Man_Ape and Lake Placid 2. I remember the post you are referring to. What I meant to say was that on the current thread or topic that I was reading at the time, no one was guessing the right person. Obviously, if someone where to guess EVERY chracter then of course they would have "guessed" it. It's just that at that point, I hadn't noticed anyone guessing it right. I only post and engage in talkbacks on this site so there could be another site where people have it all figured out. I'm just very excited for people to see these episodes but at the same time I don't want to spoil anyone out of respect to the people making the show and to those who haven't seen the episodes yet. That being said, I can tell you that I've seen NOTHING regarding Simon the cylon. Although I do suspect he will have an important roll to play considering the events of Season 2. Also, when I said that the first ep of the last 10 was so good, it had nothing to do with any reveals or surprises, it's just that the show is beginning to recapture some of that season 1-2-mini-series magic in terms of tone and epic mythology. And Caprica just plain rules.

You know, once upon a time, when a series aired a string of episodes ending in a finale, and then went off the air for a year and a half, you would call the new episodes a new season, not the second half of the season that started 2 years ago but nobody remembers. Hell, you might even call it a special reunion miniseries. Not "the last half of season 4", but "Return To Galactica".

Sep 2nd, 2008
08:38:07 AM
... Every time the show has gone off the air in the last few years, I've all but completely forgotten about it. A major reason is as listed above, the wretched scheduling.

The major thing that (at least partially) killed the show for me are the characters of Helo and Athena who I now extremely loathe (and yes, I can separate that from the actors who play them).

I can't say I liked the characters of Jammer or Ellen Tigh all that much but Jammer, I especially identified with because I think that would be the character I would have been most like. Desperately trying to do what I thought was the right thing, making a mess of it and getting punished for it. We got to see that play out over quite a lot of screen time (mainly the webisodes) and how it got him shot out of an airlock with the people responsible not knowing nor seeing the reasoning and struggle of his decision - nor would they have cared for the most part at the time anyway. That was much like real life can be time and time again. Those parts of the show can be done well.

However, Helo and Athena get free passes for anything and everything they do with no or disproportiately light consequences for their actions again and again and again. The audience can buy a lot of things in the context of this universe including the mysticism but this is one thing I've seen that a lot of people cannot. When Athena shot Natalie for reasons that can be best described as "spurious" I think a lot of people threw up their hands after the penalty turned out to be go stand in a corner for a short while before we act like nothing has happened. As a general rule, I think at least some of us would like something approaching consistency in terms of behaviour in how characters are treated for their actions.

Helo started off as a noble (though naive if not actually slightly thick character) to ending up so dense I was worried he was going to collapse into a neutron star. Such arguments as to why his wife couldn't possibly turn on the Colonials because "she said so" - well that's convincing. It went downhill from there. Especially when it gets increasingly obvious that the way the character is played has shown multiple instances of putting herself first before everyone - including Helo.

I think another talkbacker summed up perfectly how I felt in one of the early 4th Season talkback when he said something along the lines of "I want to keep enjoying this show but why is it now feeling like watching it is like doing homework?".

So are Adama and Roselyn...

Everything you're saying is valid and I can't really argue with any of it. I'm just going with the whole "We've become a gang" angle to rationalize the inconsistencies and lack of Athena justice. My friend and I have a running joke regarding Helo: Ice Cream. Adama keeps a secret stash of ice cream aboard the Galactica that no one gets to have but Helo. Shot your wife? Here's some Ice cream son. Didn't wanna kill the cylons? Have some ice cream Poor Helo, has to go on the demetrius, make sure he has plenty of ice cream! And a little part hat too! Talk back to the president? Ice Cream!!! Poor little Helo. Turn your back on all the 8's? Don't worry Athena still loves you, oh and here's some ice cream. Adama walking around the galactica all solemn with a helo Sunday in his hand, etc. There is a scene in the new ep that encompasses everything in your last post, helo and athena having a great time, etc. I'm sure they'll get theirs though. Moore wouldn't set up this situation without addressing it. I have faith.

Imagine if ABC shelved a finished season of Lost for almost a year? Same with FOX and 24, or CBS with....Ok there's nothing really worth watching on CBS....

My point is, no other network could get away with doing this to their top rated shows, so why is Sci-FI being douches about it? Because they're a speciality channel? Because their ratings aren't in the high millions? Because they use a collection of hamster wheels rolling across a giant calendar and where the hamsters stop on said calendar is when they air the show? It is getting betond annoying and mindboggling having to put up with this. Oh well, only 11 more hours of TV time 'til I stop caring about this.

And for the record, the final cylon is the Starboard Flightpod on the Galactica. It let those Cylon's on the ship a little too easily in the episode Scattered.

... All of this has happened before and all of this has happened again, which means that Athena should be chucking herself off a cliff at some point - and that's not a spoiler because I don't know anything, I'm just speculating from prior information in the show.

I always was a Doctor Who fan from decades back but I felt that BSG was initially more consistently better to start with than the new Doctor Who episodes on at the same time. It didn't escape my attention that for me personally, a point came where I was enjoying Doctor Who a lot more than BSG. Yes, various inanities abounded in Doctor Who (have always done so) but I always found it fun. BSG started becoming too much work and I was starting to watch it out of a grim sense of obligation.

I will be watching the last 10 episodes but I won't really be anticipating it like I did the show a few years ago. Primarily I would blame that on scifi stretching the whole show out far too long between blocks of episodes.

Athena as a character doesn't really make any sense to me unless she's a sleeper agent, even from herself where she thought she was running out on the experiment on Caprica but in fact was continuing it for the other Cylons - after all they completely rewrote Boomer's mind. Sadly, I see insufficient evidence of this being true. There could be supernatural manipulation but that's different.

Boomer was another storyline that seems to have been crashed. There was a marked jump in the character going from pro-peace/compromise to destroy all humans. I know there was a fair chunk of her storyline deleted but it rendered her character rather wasted, which is a shame given that it was once a major character.

Other dud bits concerning Athena included her telling Adama that she didn't have any hidden sleeper commands (by pulling a gun on her no less). How would she know? That's why they call them "hidden sleeper commands" (see Encyclopedia Galactica under Boomer). Really one part of the show that took a major logic bypass.

Well, thanks for taking the time to talk to us about the upcoming show a bit more with us. Much appreciated ...

In the last few weeks various people behind the scenes - writer/producers Jane Espenson and Mark Verheiden, composer Bear McCreary, CGI creator Mojo, various actors - have confirmed that filming for the show was finished around the 12th of August and the final batch of episodes are now in post. On his blog McCreary reports he is now scoring the last four episodes and the CGI guys are reporting they're nearly finished as well. Producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick have been cutting the last few eps and have found there is enough material to extend the finale to three episodes, which has been done. Post on a modern TV drama, even an effects-heavy one, shouldn't take any more than a week per episode. So the finale should be complete, with CGI and music in place and the final cut in the can in the next few weeks at the absolute latest. If they started showing the next episode tomorrow, they would still be able to complete post on the remainder of Season 4.5 with weeks to spare. What makes this all the more inexplicable is that it has been suggested that the finale is Emmy-worthy, but by pushing the season back to April the final 3-4 eps will miss the Emmy nominations period, so that explanation is out. The only hopeful thing is that the last official word from a Sci-Fi Channel exec was that Season 4.5 would air first or second week of January (I think it was even specified to around the 9th), whilst this latest report seems to be a rumour circulating around the actors. Let's hope they're wrong and the SFC sticks to its original date. Or Sky One in the UK hear about this and say, "Fuck that," and show the season as planned in January, which they have the power to do since they cofunded the series in the past (unless they want to piss off the SFC so they don't get Caprica).

as 'the complete fourth season' even though it will only be the 10 episode's aired, this is how they are stretching the show out over 'five' seasons, by splitting 4 in half. Sci fi does this, and cancels stargate altoghether, in the same year, cheap bastards!

...is that they air the last chunk of episodes without any further breaks between them. Whenever this fucking thing hits the air, every week I want to be able to count on there being a new one on, until there are no new ones left to be on. That will make me happy.

That and the end of the show not being a total copout, of course.

I'm a big fan but at this point really don't care

The best way to screw up the ending is to drag it out for so long that by the time the last episode is aired we have all moved on to other shows. This is also making it harder for us to move to the new Caprica show.

If the SF execs decide to push back the air date, they can do that. I was at that panel Sunday when Aaron brought up the date and trust me, he wasn't BS-ing us. He was pissed. So was James Calllis. They are DONE with the show, save for the DVD movie that Eddie Olmos is working on with the cast. Supposedly Eddie had DVDs of the first six of the remaining episodes WITH HIM at the con so he can work on story ideas for the movie whenever he could. These actors want the show back so the fans can watch it. They want it back so that we can see them and their WORK. Ron Moore is probably even MORE frustrated. Betcha ten bucks that if the ate is pushed back, Ron Moore himself will spoil the whole damn thing "accidentally".

are not actually finished, as many people here have claimed. If they wrapped filming three weeks ago, there's no way they'd be ready for the fall television season. And there's a mini-series sometime before the year is out? Sounds like January is the logical time for the rest of the season to come out, then. Here's my next question: why is the filming schedule for BSG so strange? Why wasn't season 4 finished in time to end last spring?

okay, sure, I can see that. But hasn't BSG had a history of production interruptions and bizarre scheduling throughout its run? I think the last episode, despite how I feel about the quality of the last season and a half, was a good way to end the season. Almost Farscape-esque, actually.
I think they wanted to push it back...

...and the reaction on line (and to the SF channel via other media) to the "leak" was so quick and so negative they had to backpeddle and put out the statement. Aaron Douglas sure as heck didn't seem to be "intentionally leaking" this when he expressed his frustration about it on Sunday. We may never know (until, perhaps, Olmos, Moore or someone else on the show puts out a biography).

to bring up Farscape didn't you? To reiterate everything that has been said so far. FUCK SFC. Fuck Bonnie "I don't like space shows" Hammer. And Fuck all the reality bullshit they put on.

Once Galactica is over I'm going back on my SFC boycott. I dig some Eureka, but its not enough for me to watch the network. After the crap they pulled with Farscape I completely removed SFC from all traces of my mind. I took it off my cable tuner and everything. I only started watching it again when they aired The Peacekeeper Wars, which, while aired on SFC was not an SFC production. The Henson Co. funded it without the aid of the "Sci-Fi Crushing" Hammer.

And sure, BSG has had a screwy schedule, but the schedule is always dictated by one of two things, long planning in advance by the network, or the crews finishing the shows just fast enough to get it on the air (the second half of Lost last season is a prime example). Sure the entire season isn't in the can, but they could beginning airing next month (maybe earlier) and show one episode a week until the show was over if they did not stop production.
This has all happened before...
