The Ruins - Mediocre at Best

Can't say it's a great flick but it's at least watchable with a few decent scares and some decent gore.

One scene bugged me - when the group of 20-somethings are stuck at the camp on the top of the pyramid and things are getting bad, the blond chick decides to give her boyfriend a handjob......wtf? Did the intravenous vines tell her to do that? And speaking of the vines, it's no wonder the trailers never indicated that killer vines were the "monster" (trailer made it seem like X-Files-type Black Oil worms) as no matter how well the effect is done, moving, sentient (and vocalizing - lol!) foliage is just stupid. It's as dumb in a 60's episode of Lost in Space as it is in a 2008 multi-million buck horror flick. And please, the ending with the lone survivor revealed as having them nasty vines in her system almost begs for a 50's Ib Melchoir sci-fi b-flick "THE END.......?" tagline.

It really appears the American movie industry is incapable of making a decent horror flick without a bunch of college douchebag leads. How an old, classic actor like Christopher Lee still finds work in the current mainstream movie climate is one of the mysteries of the 21st Century.

Harry's right about The Ruins. It's great. DreamWorks fucked up the marketing. The performances are what make the movie. This isn't Brittany Snow or Camilla Belle running around from some psycho. Jonathan Tucker and Jena Malone are both solid young pros. On the other hand, Stop-Loss has a first-rate young cast but the movie pretty much sucks. It's a mess and the drop in quality from Boys Don't Cry is kind of astonishing. It's not a pimple on Elah's ass, and Generation Kill is doing it better too. A conversation starter sure, but ultimately forgettable thanks to some pretty pedestrian writing and a lame duck performance from Abbie Cornish.

A big fan favorite round these parts.

Ok who the hell is Steve Prakogy? Or Steve something from AICN whos name is on the cover of the Ruins? I've been seeing that more and more these days on movie posters and the such. I think the first one I saw was for Nightwatch. There should be a list somewhere (until it gets too big) of all the stuff with AICN on it, from TWBB to Southland Tales, to the Signal. My co-worker was telling me how I read just a fanboy page no one cares about, then I showed him the TWBB movie page where AICN blurb is like the second or third on the list. And he was a huge fan of TWBB (well because Rottentomatoes gave it such good scores how could he not?).

Ok so what has she been up to since Boy's Don't Cry? I mean didn't that movie take two weeks to make? And now almost 10 years later we get her next flick? I don't think she made enough money off of Boys to not do anything for close to 10 years? Theres something about a failed hollywood murder movie and some L Word crap. I didn't understand why everyone thinks Boy's Don't Cry was so amazing? Maybe thats because I don't understand why Hilary Swank, Chloë Sevigny and Peter Sarsgaard are always considered these amazing actors? I can kind of see it in Swank because she actually becomes a character but the other two have been doing nothing but playing them selves since day one. Plus it takes a HUGE stretch of the imagination to see Saarsguard as meancing. Probably just as big of a stretch to see Ryan Phillippe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Channing Tatum and Hitman as soilders. I don't think any movie will nail real Army people and speak as well as Redacted did (even if it is just an updated version of Casualties of War, I guess De Palma ran out of people to copy so he just copied himself?). I'll check Stop-Loss out, because the last movie I nay-sayed I watched last night (Into the Wild) and it was really good. I don't see Stop-Loss turning out as well though.

Then again, I read the series before I saw the movie, and I'm sure that set the bar of expectations higher than if I went in cold. Nonetheless, didn't anyone else feel like they should have cut or added more? As it is, I thought the film, even with the content edits, suffered from some awkward pacing. The whole thing felt like a race to get from one plot point to the next.

NoPIX sez:

"I don't remember the handjob in the film. In the book she gives him a handjob. And it's the kind of thing that works very well in the book because, well, if you've read it you know that you get inside the character's heads."

It's in the movie, at least in the home video dvd and blu-ray release. The way it's presented in the movie, it seems very arbitrary and clumsily staged like someone thought "oh shit, we don't have any sex between these twenty-somethings, just shoehorn this quick little jerkoff scene .....uhhh, HERE!"

Series7 sez:

"Christopher Lee can't find work anymore, everyone cuts him out of their movies."

Well, he's getting work and he's getting paid, so my comment stands. Yeah it sucks his parts are getting hacked outta movies though. It supports his statement that modern directors and producers don't have a clue to what they're doing when they bother to cast him in roles (with the questionable exception of Tim Burton) and wind up cutting his footage. BTW, wanna see Lee really shine in a relatively recent lead role, track down the very tough to find "Jinnah." It's not some sci-fi/horror/fantasy flick but it does feature Lee in one of the top 5 best leads of his career.

One last comment about the blu-ray version of "The Ruins," it's being discovered that the disc will not load on some blu-ray players, notably the newer Panasonic players. You have to turn off the "24 frame output" feature to get it to load properly. It's a problem some new Paramount blu-ray titles seem to have.

I'll second that the handjob scene was not in the theatrical release. I hate when DVD releases add scenes that detract from a film just so they can say UNRATED on the cover. I saw The Ruins in a packed house (surprising considering the shit trailers) and it's definitely ahead of the curve in terms of shit Hollywood horror. Horror fans have to be desperate due to a nonstop influx of crap. Sure, vines are corny, but that's not what I was thinking about when they're working their way inside those kids. It's kind of like Cabin Fever, except no one is having any fun.

Ruins unrated vs theatrical SPOILER
by GavinVanDraven
Jul 8th, 2008
03:12:39 PM
i have seen both, the unrated ending shows the final survivor "infected". the theatrical version has the same scene without the reveal. as far as the "handjob" scene goes. i totally get why it is in there. she was trying to make things normal, just for a little while... but they were both too freaked out to actually go with it and get their scrump on. some people make jokes in a stressfull or scary situation because that is their nature and that is "normal". (Hud in Cloverfield)What were these kids doing when we first saw them? they had just gotten out of bed... and had just had sex. so, you draw your own conclusions.
that being said...

THE RUINS rocked hardcore. it is more than just "killer vines" that makes this movie. its what the characters do to each other to "help" each other that is truly scary. and no i am not talking about hand jobs. the feeling of isolation and hopelessness in an open environment is pulled off nicely. nothing seems forced, every action seems justified for the situation and there is a "logic" to what is going on. 1000 years of sacrifices fed those vines. they soaked up more blood than they did rain. when the bloodletting stopped, they adapted... much like the venus flytrap adapted. instead of using smell... it learned to mimic sound,, to lure its prey. or you could just say "its an evil fucking place." i am personally sprinkling/dumping salt around the next pumpkin patch i see....

"..were the pussies that don’t like horror in the first place" Oh do fuck off Harry. The Ruins was boring, predictable dross; a few inventive deaths with a plot desperately wrapped around it. Man, I've never been so bored watching a movie since Death Proof. If you want good horror, check out Inside, [Rec] or The Orphanage. And for the record, I had heard a lot of good things about the book, so I gave it a try. It also stank. I can't believe it was written by the same guy who did A Simple Plan.

At least The Batman cartoon got Green Lantern right
by Cannabis Holocaust
Jul 8th, 2008
08:53:05 PM
Hal Jordan is the greatest Green Lantern and should be the main Green Lantern in other media and not be disrespected just because DC wants to make feeble attempts to look more diverse. The main Green Lantern is NOT a Peter Parker wannabe or an NAACP poster boy (not the charcater himself but the way they exploited him in the show), it's motherfuckin' HAL JORDAN. And just for the record I am a fan of John Stewart in the comics but the John Stewart in the Justice League cartoon wasn't even the same character. They made him too strongly influenced by Hal Jordan even to the point of cannibalizing his story lines. That just goes to show the ONLY reason they chose "John Stewart" for the show was for the team to appear more superficially diverse. That is racist and that is WRONG. Having said that, the episode of The Batman with Green lantern was pretty crappy and GL got his ring stolen by the Penguin. Meh...

Lame. Why in 2008 do we still have animation that runs at 10 FPS? WHY?! SPEND SOME MONEY!! Jesus. WB could spend more money on the production on these animations and running at 30 FPS alone would help TREMENDOUSLY! Sure, thats just the technical part but the stories themselves sucked as well. So, WB, spend more money on better talent to write these animations too. Gotham Knight was a MAJOR letdown! And why all the love for The Justice League New Frontier? That was lame as well. And Harry gushing all over it just totally throws me. What was so great about it? It was average at best. One of these days we will get a GREAT Super Heroe animated movie but that has YET to happen!

Wanted to like it... but no. I'm sick of the tourists horror. Are vines original? Sorta, but the set up was so annoyingly Turistas-ish (and there really are parts of that film I like more than this I'm sad to say). Hell the film is basically Turistas with vines. The thing that bugs me is this film thinks it's the next The Decent. It thinks it's a classic and smart and so on yadda yadda. I watched the extras with everybody talking about how smart this film is. It isn't. This isn't Heart of Darkness. Could it have been? Honestly, maybe. I think the potential was there with this kind of set up, but a thousand times worse than Roth with Hostel, it missed its mark. There is no suspense. No convincingly unnerving psychological content. They don't even touch on human sacrific and they are standing on a Mayan Pyramid. No scenes that scared me, be it a jump or nerves. It's horror in that it is horrifying. It is a girl in her underwear cutting herself open. It will shock and gross out the faint, but it never terrified. Most disappointing film this site has pulled off getting me excited for in a while. If this really is underrated or even the best horror film of the year, that says very very bad things about the state of horror. Sorry, but wasn't floored.

I loved the part where he went on and on about water. "We each need half a gallon or water a day to survive and right now we don't even have a days worth." And yet... three days they survive. Sure, people die, meaning more to go around, but come on. Day three and the last girl is sprinting to safety. I hate it when horror movies don't live up to their own rules. To this day the thing that pisses me off most about Hostel is that it's all about being realistic (scratches head over the logic of the eyeball scene), yet apparently putting a glove over severed fingers and nothing more = won't bleed to death and after a couple+ hours being able to wrestle down a larger man all while not being the least bit pale. No. Bleed to death.

...there was a good article on "Stop-Loss" that EW did back when the film came out that went into detail regarding what Peirce has been up to since "Boys Don't Cry." Short story: she poured herself into writing a true crime movie (forgot the specific one, but it was Hollywood-based and she claimed that by writing it, she may have discovered the "true killer) that was sort of torn apart by studios, and then never happened. Then "Stop-Loss" suddenly came into being when someone related to her became involved in the war.

And using that cardboard cutout of a character "Hud" from Cloverfield as an example of any sort of human behavior does not support your argument for what a real person would do in a stressful situation.

BTW, I watched the blu-ray of Batman Begins last night. The movie looks pretty good if a bit soft in hidef, but the 10 minute IMAX filmed preview of The Dark Knight looks absolutely stunning in 1080p.

I disagree. Guy Maddin is the new thing baby. If you haven't already Harry, go see 'My Winnipeg'. You may never be the same.

I am a bit of a WWII buff and would like to say wikipedia has a long article on "UNIT 731" as it is called. The reason the USA sought to learn what the EVIL JAPANESE DOCTORS knew was because of fear that the RUSSIANS would use their "UNIT 731" findings against the USA populations. I guess it was the right call since we are alive 63 years later (and angry about the trivial price of a gallon of gasoline). FREEDOM is never really FREE. It costs greatly. I feel sad for the UNIT 731 victims and can not bear to watch this film, the reviews at AMAZON make it sound brutal.
