I never played the games, so I obviously had a few problems less problems with them than other people had. I think the first one was great fun when you watch it together with some of your best friend a lots of beer and the 2nd one is seriously the only movie where I can honestly say "check your brain at the door and enjoy" (I hate this phrase even more than "Worst film ever", "Best show on TV" and "Nuked The Fridge"). But damn, the 3rd one bored me to death. I was so hoping for a comeback of Russell Mulcahy, but this was probably one of his three worst films. (And we all know how much shit this unfortunately not untalented director made over the years.) To make it short: I don't really care for RE 4.

these movies are a guilty pleasure for me. the first movie at least captured the "tone" of the games a little. but all three could have been much much better. the should have more closely followed the games. i bought my first playstation when the first RE game came out, and i am an addict ever since. i dust the whole series off every couple years and give it a playthrough. that being said, the should just reboot the series, and start it off at the mansion, with chris, jill, barry and wesker... and play out that story... without so much "backtracking for items". a reference to green herbs would be funny.... as would "will you take the crank?" um, yes... i think i will. the games have a much deeper story than the movies do anyways. they could put another 5 movies into development, based on the games, and go in a different direction. at the same time, in a different place.... no milla, just a cop with a gun and a whole lotta scary shit.

The first movie is kind of whatever, some neat small moments and a good shot here and there but nothing that huge. The 2nd movie is cornball and cheese, but it's really, really, really entertaining. Nemesis as the Terminator robot and the pimped out guy who carries "custom" gold plated rifles! And a motorcycle flying in slow-motion to blow up a licker? That shit is gold!! and the third one I thought was a genuinely atmospheric sci-fi action thriller that looked real good and with a crazy cool ending and some neat shout-outs to series continuity (Albert Wesker! The Tyrant!!) Yes, they're piss poor adaptations of the RE game universe, but as their own thing, they're starting to branch out into different ways. Let Anderson write the script and someone else direct, and it could be a good B-movie like the 3rd movie was.

has only directed 1 film that i love. event horizon is, for me, one of the scariest damn things i have ever seen. and i am not too sure that has anything to do with his directing. just a great little outerspace ghost story. i find the first resident evil and AVP somewhat entertaining guilty pleasures, but neither are high cinema. mortal kombat and soldier were dreck, i felt myself get dumber as they went on... i think he has a better overall report card than m. night shamalamadingdong, but i have not seen "the sight" or "shopping".... so i cannot give him an overall grade. however, if he directs resident evil 4 it will probably be better than 2 and 3 because he didnt direct 2 or 3, and as i said before... the first one captured the "tone" of the games.

You see, people like McG, I'll defend in a case like the new Terminator movie, because he seems to be taking a lot of the right steps towards acknowledging and respecting the fact that he's walking into a world with an incredibly intense and loyal fanbase that has been established for years, decades even. He knows he's facing an uphill battle, that much has been made clear from the few posts on his blog. The amount of shit thrown at him would've discouraged a lesser man. Whether the film is good or not remains to be seen, but I fully respect him for burdening himself with the mammoth responsibility of not only following in James Cameron's footsteps, but attempting to restore the franchise to it's former glory after the misfire that was T3. Paul W-I've-Added-Initials-To-My-Na me-In-An-Effort-To-Add-Instacr ed S. Anderson has neither the same respect for the franchise, nor the same tenacity as McG. He buttfucked the original game in the 1st movie, he buttfucked the 3rd game in the 2nd movie (yeah, throwing a very hot Jill and a crap Carlos in there isn't fooling anyone), and he buttfucked a perfectly good screen-heroine-to-be in the 3rd movie when he brought Claire into it. I can understand deviating from the source material when the transition from medium to medium necessitates it, but for fuck's sake, if I got to see a movie called Romeo & Juliet I expect to see fucking Romeo & Juliet, when I watch Watchmen I expect to see a film made by some guys who actually read, love and respect the source. I do NOT expect to see massive elements of the story replaced with some shit about an amnesiac super-model the director happens to be boning who progressively acquires super-powers as the story becomes ever weaker and facilitates the NEED for said super-powers to keep Joe Six-Pack swilling those beers and coming back for whatever piece of shit sequel you churn out. I sorta liked RE:Extinction. I say that in the sense that I think all three suck, but it really did look and feel about a hundred times better than Apocalypse. I came out of the first one frustrated by some of the same peeves I had with Silent Hill (which is my favorite survival horror series): they worked off of the sequel. Making RE:2 into the first movie just set the whole shit storm in motion for these films to never make sense. It was mildly amusing, but overall a reaffirmation that Mr. Anderson does indeed suck. I mean, he does have some vague understanding of how horror works. He showed that with Event Horizon. Apparently he just thought adapting a game loved for how scary it was into something that isn't the least bit scary would be creative. Either way, he made something almost interesting. RE: Apocalypse was so bad I've actually erased most of it from my memory. The more I try to recall it... agh! a fucking Goro style slugfest at the end... WTF!!!???!!!?!?!?!? Perhaps more details would secure my case about 2 being worse than 3, but I've got better things to do with my life. 3 just looked better. It looked like it was trying to be scary and harsh and REesque. Sure, it was the final and ultimate fuck you to the games, but at this point, its sorta nice to know you can play the future games without these crapfests' taint on them. I mean really, who has played Resident Evil 2 recently and got through the train cart battle without having that shitty film's nod to it creep into your mind? Peace.

I personally love going to the theater to see the RESIDENT EVIL movies. They're what going to the movies is all about, really - just having fun and enjoying oneself and not trying to be grumpy about what you're seeing on the screen. Have a good time. This doesn't mean that I ascribe to the whole "turn off your brain at the door" idea - I don't like that kind of attitude. But RESIDENT EVIL as a series represents is the kind of movies a person goes to see to follow the adventures of the main character. I care about Alice as a character and I like seeing her grow and change as the series goes on, and to revisit the world of the story. Naysayers can criticize the movie for not being "deep" enough - but I just enjoy the story. So there.

the 3rd movie is good, and actually works GREAT as a standalone flick. i didn't care for #2 at all, and i think you can go directly from #1 to #3 without losing anything. watch #3 and just ocnsider it a post-apocalyptic movie about a woman who has mysterious powers. there's a mysterious corportation testing out clones of her. there's a band of friends she knows from a while back that she helps out. plus, i love the Boy and His Dog feel of the first bit where she's traveling alone...

Yeah... I sorta agree, but am still frustrated at what could have been. I mean, Bean should have been the one running around in Silent Hill, he was perfect casting completely misused. And then there is the millions of other things as a HUGE fan of the series that bug me about the film. Still. I own it. and do like to kick back to it. But christ, The Dark (also with Bean) did a better job capturing the spirit of Silent Hill. Such a disappointment. Better the RE though.

the game's characters are much cooler anyway. I was just watching RE4's cutscenes, marveling at the cinematic quality of the action. I really wouldn't mind a movie that is a little crazy with cultists and big monsters, but it can still be smart and fun. I just watched the second Resident Evil movie a couple of weeks ago and it was just rank. It had elements of the game but they were executed soooo poorly. The movies are great materials for movies. I can't see why nobody cares to actually make it as cool as the games do.

The skin rip is the highlight of the film. It's shocking, brutal and in character for Pyramid Head. The barbecue and the hellraiser barbwire shit at the end pissed me off. The barbecue, both because it felt like a major misuse of a prominent character from the series and secondly because the CGI felt CGI. A lot of the CGI "enhancements" really took away from Silent Hill. Smart lighting and those twisted kids would have looked a hell of a lot scarier without the fire effects added. And the barbwire mega-death... it just was too over the top. It wasn't Silent Hill. Silent Hill is about the unsettling horror of its world. The already mutilated bodies cluttering the path. Rare is the depiction of violence in the games. Heck, Silent Hill 2 was even advertised as a game where you AVOID conflict, and was made such that it was highly unpleasant to kill a monster. There should have been more hiding and than a few unpleasant rusty pipe battles. That barbwire mega monster pissed me off. Reminded me of the House on Haunted Hill remake. Movies going along, sorta not sucking. Geoffrey Rush is genius casting... it's a pretty scary Jacob's Ladder ripoff... than that bullshit CGI ghost comes at the end and the film goes to utter shite. All defense of the film breaks down, and the path is laid out for all the crappy films like Thir13en Ghosts that were to follow.
