I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Russert following a Washington Nationals game last season. He was really kind...and seemed genuinely happy to shake my hand (even though he was with his wife and someone else). He told me that he was glad and encouraged that a young man actually watches his show and follows the news. He also said that he wouldn't hold my Phillies cap against me (I'm a Phillies fan).

Now that Russert is in Heaven, we are left with only right-leaning (FoxNews) and left-leaning (nearly everyone else on CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC and NBC). *Sigh*

I hope that they allow Tom Brokaw to fill in for him for a little while on MEET THE PRESS. Brokaw, although retired, shared a similar middle-class background and similar unbiased poltical views. But I don't know ANYONE who could replace Mr. Russert.

God bless him and his family (including his son, Luke). He is in our thoughts and prayers.

I'm sure that he was probably biased...but he didn't show it in his commentary.

He was so unlike the majority of media members who hump the leg of Barack Obama, Senator McCain or the political parties. Russert was able to divide his personal views away from his commentary. He was a true political scientist -- even though his educational background was in Law.

...this is rather shocking. Especially for anyone who cares about news, journalism, and the various degrees of media-political punditry. You could see during interviews, opinion pieces, or even in his role as debate moderator that he was extremely passionate about what he did.

The far left tried to paint him in a corner because they believe he allowed MEET THE PRESS to be a bullhorn for the Administration in the build-up to the Iraq War. But I give Big Russ more credit than that. He was one of the better journalists on the beat. And it's a shame he's gone just as we're about to go into the General Election...he loved electoral politics. He will be missed.

Good point! I shudder every time I watch some of the other political pundits humping Obama's leg. Who was it that talked about "chills vibrating up his leg" during an Obama rally?

Tim Russert repeatedly invited Obama for an interview, but Obama declined most of those invitations. His advisor's stated off the record that they worried about the questions that Russert would ask. Obama often complains about any questions dealing with his personal history. Yet Russert stated that he held the right to ask ANY questions that he felt was relevant.

Russert's performance was even more remarkable since it came from a guy who was a dedicated Democrat when he was a young man! Yet you couldn't see any sort of biased commentary during his shows. He grilled the best of them -- regardless of political affiliation.

If you believe in "journalists" trying to balance their programs (as far as NBC would allow him in the two-party system), then your hatred of O'Reilly and in face Fox News is rational. You should save some resentment for the left-leaners, who are much rarer and far less powerful, but people like O'Reilly and Brit Hume are blights upon the journalistic world precisely because they claim to be bringing the world "fair and balanced" news coverage while living in Dick Cheney's ass.

Have some respect, people!

Tim Russert will be missed because he was one of the few examples of political pundits who were able to keep their opinions to themselves in the search for answers. While FoxNews pundits hump the right wing, and as nearly every other channel is filled with Obama humpers, it was refreshing to watch a show that didn't lean one way or the other. Russert leaned toward the truth. He will be missed.

I don't Know if I've ever cried with such honest, sorrow over a public personality in my life. You exemplified the best of what the Fourth Estate could and should be. You saw the best in our nation, and you strove, fearlessly, to get us there. Recently, just days ago, you said that this year gives us the opportunity to have a real "substantive debate" about the issues that matter to our country. I will pray everyday we give back an inkling of what you have given us by honoring that final, selfless request. In short, we must do this one for "Little Russ." I'm sitting here listening to MSNBC and CNN and all the thoughts of Russert's colleagues and friends.

I guess it's somewhat understandable that some of us, me included, think of the despicable scumbags like O'Reilly that still draw breath at a time like this. Russert's death seems so unfair, and I suppose, I for one, extrapolate that unfairness to anger towards said scumbags.

But now I am struck by how Tim Russert would probably not enjoy comments like the one I made about Bill O., so I regret them. I'd hate to do Russert a dishonor, even in an RIP TB like this. He's an honorable man and he deserves the props.

In this day and age of liberal bias in the media (I should know because I used to be part of it and still deal with media on a daily basis), Tim Russert was a beacon of true lack of bias.

A lifelong democrat, he treated dems and republicans on the same level. Didn't matter who you were, you got hardball questions and if you tried to spin him, he'd nail ya.

There aren't many like him in the media left, with Chris Wallace being one possible acception although I think his time at Fox has leaned him too far to the right.

Tim Russert will never be replaced. The void he leaves in news is inconceivable. He will be sorely missed.

Tim Russert - the living definition of fair and balanced.

he was like my Sunday morning buddy. I would just sit in my comfy chair, grab my cereal and tune in for the best hour of political talk on tv.

he always showed respect for his guests (regardless of political affiliation), and seemed to really take joy in real political debate.

I would actually talk back to the TV during Meet the Press, and quite a few times he would bring up the point or question I was yelling at the TV about.

his books been on my read list, just had not picked it up yet. stopping by barnes on the way home. think I'll read it on Fathers day.

Tim Russert and Meet the Press First TV show that was recorded in the mid 90's in HD was a test brodcast in HD. The recording tested the the grounds on what stations needed to do for HD... better makeup and cleaner floor space and hiding wires. These small items showed up on the recording. BTW being an ex Washingtonian.. I frequently had seen Tim Russert in a couple different local supermarkets. I always wanted to say to him " First in HD!".

He treated his good friend like a leper when the whole Imus/Rutgers Women situation went down. He went from going on Imus' show once a week (and being legitimately close to Imus' young son - close enough that he sent him birthday gifts and talked to him regularly on the phone), to running away from him as quickly as he possibly could when trouble hit. All he had to say was, "I know Don Imus very well and I don't think he would say something intentionally to hurt those womens' feelings or that he is a racist person. He made a bad joke and I believe him when he says he's sorry." Instead, he said nothing and silently let his friend twist in the wind.

You judge a man's character by his actions when times are hard, not by his behavior when everything's going great.

No TV journalist is unbiased. Russert worked for the most biased news channel in US history yet he was one of the few there that tried to be fair. When you look at Olbermann and Matthews you have to ask yourself why those two rude, mean-spirited, biased talking asses continue when the one straight-shooter they had passes. Life works that way I suppose. BTW, quit talking shit on O'Reilly. He may be an egotistical bastard, but he is that way with everyone. He plays it straight too.

Sad to lose someone who understood impartiality. Modern political discourse is dead as the room is now filled not with moderators or newsmen, but demagogues. People don't want to hear political discourse, they only want to hear somebody espousing the same values as themselves, because if someone on TV says it to be so it must be true.

Everyone from Hillary and Obama to Hannity and Limbaugh are expressing their condolences for this man. That just goes to show you the respect and admiration he got from both sides. Regarding some previous posts, yes there are deplorable pundits on both sides of the political spectrum that are just outright mean-spirited and nasty (Olberman on the left, Savage on the right). Although we may disagree with their views and despise the way they try and express them, I really don't think they deserve death and an eternity in hell to be wished upon them. Is that where we've come as a society? That if you disagree with someone's political views and/or how he/she expresses them, the penalty is death and an eternity in hell? And people wonder why we are so politically divided as a nation?

I've been watching Russert since the mid 90's and Meet the Press was one of the first things I programed in as a season pass when I got my first Tivo some years back. Oreilly just attacked McCain on his show. I dont like him much either, but he really does attack everyone, it is just that radical liberals bother him more than most when they let people get away with anything they want. Try listening to him instead of hating him because Hollywood does. As far as MSNBC goes, they are the most liberal. Just because you agree with everything Olbermann and MAtthews spew doesnt mean it isnt liberal. Matthews takes anything anyone says against Bush as gospel without challenging it to see if it holds up. He publically campaigns for Obama on his show. I will not even get into Olbermann. He doesn't belong on any network with the hate he dishes out. It's radically left and it is bias. Really, I do not blame you for believing they are fair, most of Hollywood is the radical liberal media arm so why shouldn't film afficiandos be the same way. Personally I hate taking a side. the dick was a corporate fascist. did anyone see his attack on RON PAUL? he even warned ron paul, to 'watch out' on the campaign trail. russert showed his true colors that day. russert worked for the globalists, agreed with the globalists, and spread the globalists propaganda. if you were getting 'teary eyed' over such a scumbag, then you need to WAKE UP. the sheep of this country need to wake up to the true facts. we are living in a CORPORATE FASCISM, and the sooner we vote out the lobbyist loving, dick sucking, money grubbing politicians, then we can restore FREEDOM to the REPUBLIC. that is why russet was a dick, and again, i am GLAD he is off the air. they will replace him with another corporate shill, but russert was a scumbag, so again, fuck 'em. if you cried over him, then what can i say? you are a man crying over the demise of a punk. so keep crying in your corner, which i find QUITE AMUSING!

On a website populated by stupid assholes, you give even newer and stronger meaning to the phrase "stupid asshole". The clip's not editted. It just doesn't say what Olbermann said it did. *gasp* He lied. It happens. If you read the article I linked to, Hume's comments were made on April 2nd (it's even reported on Media Matters - which I'm sure is your website of choice when you need to whackoff before bed) about a different immigration protest. On April 11th, Olbermann lied and attributed those comments to Hume as having been made "yesterday" (April 10th, for those playing along at home) about the protest that had been held that day (still April 10th). In otherwords, Olbermann claimed Hume commented April 2nd about the protests that took place on April 10th. That is a lie. Olbermann lied.

Now, bacci, congratulations to you for trying your best to turn this TB into a left/right political debate as you accomplished your goal. I'm sure the prior idea of utilizing this talkback as a discussion of a man's life on the day of his death was killing you that an opportunity was being wasted to perform your liberal fan dance (or as we on the otherside like to say, "drop your pants") in public. Do I agree with everything Russert did/said/thought in his life? No. But in this instance, you hijacked a thread just to start a political fight because you are idiot. Mission accomplished.

I have to say that in Australia they show Meet the Press at 5 am in the morning and because of the sheer quality of Mr. Russert's journalistic skill that made the show entertaining, engaging and just wonderful. My condolences go out to his wife and family. I got the news from my Dad on the phone and was just stunned. When I turned on the TV and watched the clips and commentaries, it only reminded me more how much he'll be missed. Russert was a rarity: an actual HONEST guy reporting the news, who wasn't afraid to look anyone in the eye from either side of the political aisle and call them on something.

As someone noted today Russert may have started out as a Democratic advisor for Pat Moynihan, but once he crossed into broadcasting he realized there was a far larger responsibility to be had, and that was being fair, unbiased and telling the truth. So RIP, Tim -- you and your marker board and your enthusiasm and most of all your integrity will be missed. It's too bad your bosses at MSNBC didn't use you as the gold standard and hire more people like you.

He's too polarizing a figure, and he's clearly way too biased as a left-leaner for anyone to take seriously the way people trusted Russert. For crying out loud, he blogs on the DAILY KOS. You think THAT doesn't prove which way he leans?

As Chris Wallace noted today, Tim Russert commanded a lot of respect and people from both sides of the aisle went on MEET THE PRESS because they knew...from his reputation and from literally watching his on-air interviews...that he was fair to everyone. Truth be told, without Russert sitting in the lead chair now, MEET THE PRESS has a two-fold problem to now overcome. First, they have the problem of finding a host that will keep the audience since Russert had the trust of his viewers. You don't lose your star like that and easily replace him. Plus, NBC will now need to find a host who...like Russert...WON'T piss off politicos, otherwise they won't do the show simply BECAUSE of who is sitting in the lead chair.

So that rules Olbermann out -- well, unless the NBC news division wants to put him in and admit publicly it's gone totally left in its bias.

I'll always remember him...

You know, the kind that actually reported the news and vents of the day, and who dug into issues without bias or judgement, rather than the type that we have now who report their opinions as fact, and who spew bile on all who don't agree with their rantings. Not only will Russert be missed, but the gap that he leaves brings us ever closer to the day where we have nothing but opinion and propoganda dressed up as news left on our screens.

Tim Russert gone, and Fox News, and hacks like Bill O'reilly continue to thrive. There really is no justice in this world anymore.

...right wingers at FoxNews and left-wingers pretty much everywhere else. Have you noticed the giddy manner in which most in the media have been humping the leg of Obama? It is really humorous -- because a recent poll by USA Today/Gallup showed that 72% of registered voters have noticed a vast amount of bias in the media toward Barack Obama.

Tim Russert humped no politician's leg.

Even after an early career with centrist Democrats, Russert showed class by concealing any sort of bias in his hard-hitting search for TRUTH. He asked IMPORTANT QUESTIONS and often reminded the candidates of the own words. This was a breath of fresh air in a town where deception or concealment has become the norm.

Is it any wonder why Obama didn't want to appear on his show again? He complained that Russert's questions were "motivated by something." THEY WERE. Russert's questions were motivated by a love for CLEAR TRUTH.

Like I said before, I had the privilege of meeting Tim Russert following a Washington Nationals' game. Even though he was with his wife and a friend, Russert seemed genuinely pleased that a young man would even recognize him. He was a class act who will be terribly missed.

last week the most 'powerful' people in the world got together in virginia to shape the POLICY of the world over the next year. in meetings called the BILDBERBERG GROUP. yet, cnn, reuters, msnbc, etc did not utter a SOUND about it? CNN is propaganda, and this scoundrel was one of CNN's frontmen. russert knows EXACTLY what is going on, yet wanted to get rich and famous, so he ignored the true news, and read whatever the corporations told him to read off the teleprompters. Obama AND Clinton sneaked off last week to attend these meetings as well, when they had their well documented 'secret' meeting. the meeting was SECRET, because they were attending BILDERBERG. now, if CNN had reported about Bilderberg, which they NEVER did, then i could say, CNN is a good network. but how can all these politicians get together, and NO NEWS networks ANYWHERE take notice? it sucks, but the entire MASS MEDIA NEWS NETWORKS are under control of the fascists. they report ONLY what they are allowed to report. google BILDERBERG GROUP 2008 to discover these criminals for yourself.

I have a feeling they may make Andrea Mitchell the new Washington Bureau Chief, but I'm not sure who they'll get to replace him on MTP. KO is too liberal to be unbiased - although I still like the way he speaks truth to power - and you need a good balanced individual to host MTP. Like KO said, they'll find another host for the show, but they'll never find another moderator. As for shogunshin, a real man has no fear or shame about shedding a few tears, but a soulless, automatron is usually too sociopathic to have enough feelings to cry.

My first reaction was shock, given his young age. MTP was one of the three MSM shows I still managed to watch on a regular basis. Although, "This Week" has been easily surpassing it these past couple of years. Russert was at his best in one on one interviews, but the show would grind to a halt whenever his buddies Carville and Matalin came on (the most useless people on earth to interview). I will always respect that he asked both Kerry and Bush about Skull and Bones, right to their face. But at the end of the day, he was just another presstitute. Better than most others perhaps, but not someone I'd shed half a tear for. I think even lawyers are more noble than today's journalists. I just hope MTP doesn't do something stupid like give the show to Matthews.

re: shogunshin, I thought he treated Ron Paul fairly. He was keeping to his style and I didn't expect anything less. What's more is that I was glad for the chance for Paul to answer difficult questions, rather than just put up with a bunch of insults. Sad as it is, Russert was one of the more fair ones out there. I'm not sure that I'll bother with MTP in the future.

In a presidential election year we've lost an important asset for making sound decisions about our (potential) leaders. Surely you aren't so shortsighted that you don't see the value of ideas, philosophy and strong leadership as possible solutions to your complaints (dealing with natural disasters, crop prices, or the very brilliant example 'dead children')

Russert raised the bar for political journalism in America. In a day of flashy pundits going for dramatic, confrontational soundbites, Russert delivered serious, relevant information in a tough but fair way. I think it speaks volumes about him as a man and a professional that EVERYBODY in Washington is going to an effort to express their detailed condolences following his death - despite Russert having held everybody's feet to the fire on national TV, the guy simply had no enemies, politically, journalistically, etc. Sad day and a big loss for America.

I have worked in a university library for ten years after a variety of jobs including print journalist; 4. I'm a registered Green. Philosophically I'm a social democrat. I've voted for Greens, Socialists, Independents, Libertarians, Democrats and even Republicans, but have most often voted Democratic for major offices because I know the Dems at least are concerned with SOME of the same problems I am and have a decent chance of actually being elected; 5. I absolutely love Keith Olbermann but he is no Tim Russert. He simply isn't objective enough to fill Russert's shoes. Russert was equally hard on guests from both sides of the isle and kept his personal politics to himself. Olbermann couldn't be more of a polar opposite. He wears his politics on his sleeve and in the last few months si
