Mister Moffat does it again. I sat there watching the first few minutes of this (Donna and here *new* life) thinking 'How in God's name is he going to resolve this?'

I needn't have worried though. This was easily the highlight of Season Four so far. I really hope that he's building for the future. Like I joked on a previous post - River Song and Bill Nighy's Doctor for 2010 - how mind-buggeringly awesome would that be?

This was perfect Dr Who as far as I'm concerned. I was watching this with my 8 and 10 year old children and their reaction to everything in it - the humour, the tension and the (mild for us grown ups) horror - was exactly what I went through back in the Patrick Troughton era. There is a unique appeal in watching a programme with your children which you remember from when you were their age, and seeing this new Who being bold and inventive but still clearly rooted in the values it has always had (and which Stephen Moffat understands so much better than Russell T Davies ever did) is a joy to treasure. Now bring on the rest of the series - next week looks like a filler but I bet that after that it's one big build up for the finale.

Agree wholeheartedly, mate!

Moffat simply treats the viewer as an intelligent person capable of sussing things out for themselves without having things telegraphed every few minutes. I too had exactly the same thought as you - that the 'Rose' finales to the season will inevitably not be as good as this.

In fact, after the three-part 'Master' arc last season (coming as it did after 'Blink'), It wouldn't surprise me if we were in for another effects-heavy disappointment to round things off.

John Simms - for fuck's sake! When they had Derek Jacobi in the fucking studio? Madness!

I have been disappointed with some of the recent two-parter which promise so much in the first episode only to lose momentum in the finale. This is definitely are good sign that Who will move from strength to strength.

It was simply stunning. The man can do no wrong and Ms Tate and Ms Kingston were astonishingly good. What Moffat does so well is lay the foundations and he never cheats, the clues are all there... Just fantastic. And hey don't grumble re: next week it's DAVID TROUGHTON and LESLEY SHARP for God's sake! Amazing cast. Incidentally I thought Colin Salmon would have made an excellent future incarnation of the Doctor.

Ol RTD royally fucked up the Masters return, so their is no reason why he won't turn this finale into another overblown mess. Didn't I read on a fansite that Simon Cowell (yes, ITV's charmless low-brow entertainment pedeller) has a 'significant role' in an upcoming story-I hope this was some very late April fools joke. Having said that, RTD just LOVES shoehorning in a celeb, dahling!!! Tonights episode was great, except it semed strange that the Doc was happy to leave River living in 'the matrix'-with no further contact with him, when he knows she is to become a significant figure in his life. Minor point though in which was the best story this season.
Sonic screwdriver + psychic paper
by Antifanboy
Jun 7th, 2008
04:45:17 PM
I don't usually watch that DW Confidential show that they have on BBC3 afterwards, but this episode, whilst very good, was a bit convoluted and stand-around-giving-answers in places, and I was hoping to get more insight about River Song. Moffat pretty much said she's a future companion and this two-parter was him setting up for his run. However, both he and RTD addressed the sonic screwdriver and psychic paper issue, saying with 45 minute episodes they can't have the Doctor being unable to identify himself in a new and hostile place, being locked up and then not being able to escape through a locked door EVERY SINGLE EPISODE. I can buy that. Though I agree it's more interesting when they find a different way of doing that...

just like the darin morgan x file or whedon buffy episodes, moffat has possibly reduced the rest of this season to rubble as this was by far the best two parter ever. Also no more alex kingston for the time being. Fabulous direction again. Loved donnas diet line. The final flourish with the screwdriver and the implication that the doctor has not yet come into his best era... Superb myth making. Tennants enthusiasm and charisma really shone thru so i hope he stays for the movie. Fantastic episode. Or episodes.wrote this on a phone so sorry for spelling. Moffat will be in charge next time round. We like.

But consider this - rumours are already flying that Neil Gaiman is in the frame for penning an episode. If that's true, then why not add Alan Moore to the mix? I mean, the guy cut his writing teeth on Marvel's Dr. Who comic and they're both ex-2000ad scribes.

Can you imagine a Season 6 with Bill Nighy's Doctor, Alex Kingston's assistant/wife and stories by Moffat, Gaiman and Moore?

It might help to think about the fact that he clearly adds to it's capabilities (as evidenced in this very episode), but also bare in mind he rarely uses it for anything other than opening/closing doors and switches of all kinds or using the quite literally 'sonic' elements to it. It's just like Batman's utility belt.

Moffat did it again. Loved the bit about the Doctor's real name (what could it be???? hope we never find out), more foreshadowing about Donna not being around much longer. The only thing about River Song and how she ended up - it doesn't have too much emotional weight because we don't know her character yet. I'd imagine that watching this back in a few years, once Alex Kingston has been in the show for a while, and seeing all the things she said come true it will have much more power. Just a tiny gripe though for what was another brilliant episode from the Grand Moff. By the way - does all this Bill Nighy talk have any basis in fact or is it just fanboy wet dreams???

payoff after payoff - just wow
by Dreamfasting
Jun 7th, 2008
07:01:56 PM
I could echo all the sentiments above about this being a fantastic payoff of every thread, every scene in part 1, but what amazed me was the change of tone - it wasn't just the second hour of a two hour story, it was "ok, now that we've set up a complex and dangerous situation, now let's turn around and show just awesome, determined and frightening the Doctor (and friends and passing acquaintances) can really be sorting it all out." Once it got rolling, there was such a sense of payoff and closure that it felt more like a season finale than just the 2nd half of a 2-parter.
Midnight might be good...
by danowen
Jun 7th, 2008
07:13:43 PM
... a friend of a friend apparently saw a preview tape of Midnight, and said it proved RTD *can* do something satisfyingly dark after all. Make of that what you will. I doubt it'll get anywhere near this two-parter, though. RTD loves broad stroke storytelling, and doesn't have the creativity (or time, in many ways) to sit down and properly work out a complex sci-fi story like Library/Forest. I still think his Davros finale will be fun, simply because of the Dalek creator's presence. And, even though s3's finale was a damp squib, the general sweep and high stakes of *all* RTD-penned finale's are good fun.
Like it or dislike it, this show is incredibly well-made.

It used to take three months to travel across the Atlantic, and here I am in 2008, watching this episode a mere two hours after it airs in Britain. Thanks to you all you who use Pirate Bay! I didn't think the screwdriver was overused this time, it's clear that he uses it just to do one thing at a time, like masking their faces, rather than an intricate set of functions on an MRI computer, like in "Smith and Jones." I do admit it's been perhaps too-heavily relied upon before, but damn if that doesn't make me want one even more. Sometimes it is used instead of the Doctor's own genius, but this time around, he figured it all out himself. Or at least, his writers did. I have no complaints about this episode at all, but if I were to do something different, it would be the scene where he crawls, hanging thousands of feet above the surface, after a dramatic exit, back to safety. We see it through the Girl's TV, and although I did like how she echoed the viewer's own reactions throughout the show, let's be honest, the Doctor was hanging thousands of feet in the air with his screwdriver in his mouth and going hand over hand to safety, like Cliffhanger and the Empire Strikes Back combined, and we see maybe four seconds of it through someone else's viewpoint. It was probably the most dramatic point, at least from a bodily harm standpoint and it was almost overlooked. But maybe it was too expensive, I don't know, I don't write the checks. All in all, a fantastic episode that was better than any American show I can think of, and totally worth the trip to Hell I've incurred by torrenting it before Sci-Fi airs its edited version. I cannot wait for the rest of the season, the specials and whatever Mr. Moffat has in store for the future. Keep up the good work.

What a joy to watch. Densely plotted and just the right amount of bravo. What I really enjoyed is a sense of not knowing what will happen next eg who will die and who will survive (Although I wasn't far wrong) The ending took me completely by surprise (The final ending that is) Still there are some major plot holes and the Vashta Nerada (is that how you spell it?) were a little too easily delt with considering the way they were built up in episode 1. And despite only knowing River Song for two episodes I did really feel for the Doctor in those scenes. Just one questions what did happen to that Diary???

Of course it can. In fact, it would probably be better if it was. Well, not ignored, but never full fleshed out. I'm of the mind almost nothing from the often discussed Time War should ever be shown. The Doctor's relationship with River Song could easily be another mystery of the Doctor's that never gets fully answered. I mean, we still really nothing about Susan from the very first Doctor!

I agree that she could be left as a mystery never actually seen again, something left off screen to our imaginations. Although they could easily use her as a companion starting next year. But with all the references to this being "the early years", I like the idea of it being a well-packaged plot hook left to simmer for 30 years from now until after the show has faded from the screens and once more been revived.

I enjoyed the emotional content of the episode (Katherine Tate and the little girl playing Cal were both excellent), but I thought the plot was predictable and lazy. Who hadn't figured out who that the little girl was the CPU of the Library and that she had saved all over the people to her hard drive? Seemed rather obvious from the very start of Part 1, I thought. I was also disappointed that Professor River Song didn't turn out to be Romana. Admittedly, that was just a pet theory of mine, so I can't really hold that against the episode itself... In any case, this 2-parter was certainly better than many of the episodes this season ("The Doctor's Daughter" and that terrible 2-parter with the Sontarans spring to mind). It was far from Moffat's best work, but still made for enjoyable TV. www.doctorwhatus.blogspot.com

Just to second everyones thumbs up for this Who episode. Opening the Tardis door by clicking his fingers was a nice touch too. Firstly, the next Doctor will still be young, or rather, at least look under 45? why? Because the current Master is younger :) Secondly, as someone mentioned, female fans :) It is now cool to watch the Doctor, whereas in Patrick's day, only true sci-fi fans watched the Doctor (sorry Patrick but no-one could call you a stud-muffin) Good 2 parter but far too many plot holes for me to be content with it... May I point out the most completely obvious flaw, 2 sonic screwdrivers... the Doctor in handcuffs and has a sonic screwdriver still on him??? He doesn't need to be Houdini, all he needs to do is point. Didn't like the trapdoor, didn't like the way the dust in sunlight piranhas were so easily dealt with. Why were they so willing to die? They checked the Library to read up on the Doctor but so many books are pure fiction, why would they believe the Legend to be true and concede defeat? And so one could go on, picking holes. There were many points I did like, Catherine Tate's acting for one but overall, the gaps in plot jarred.

It was an alright episode but it wasn't THAT good. The Vashta Narada (or whatever) completely took a back seat, and took a lot of the dramatic tension with them. Part 1 was much better. In fact the piranhas of the air became pretty much non threatening - everyone was running from room to room without checking the shadows anymore, and once they found a way to tell the Dr who they were they practically vanished from the story. Donna taking ages to realise something we already knew - that she'd been downloaded - also helped kill the tension (although the freaky face was good!). Maybe it all works better if you see both episodes back to back, though in my opinion Moffat kinda blew it.

I don't want to see her ever again!! I'd rather have the mystery of knowing she's part of some future history of the Dr's we'll never be told. He's over 900 already (and apparently still young, despite his previous incarnations as a collection of motley old gits) which presumably means that he could live at least another 9 centuries, if not longer. If you assume for the sakes of argument that each Who season = one year of his life then only a small fraction of his adventures will ever be shown. keep the mystery!! Same goes for the Time War - if they ever make the mistake of showing that, it's bound to be completely underwhelming.

Tennant and his contract: News!
by V'Shael

02:37:02 PM
David Tennant was on the morning show with Andrew Marr (who has cameo'd on the show himself) on BBC1 this morning (Sunday 8th June) and he was asked about the upcoming year. David said that he'd be doing 4 specials, but wasn't sure if they were one hour long each, or what. He starts filming in January 2009.

When he was asked about a 5th year, he hummed and hawwed and eventually said, that the truth was, he hadn't been officially ASKED about year 5 yet.

So Marr asked him, if he was offered year 5, would he stay?

And Tennant said, he'll wait until he's officially asked, before thinking about it.

It didn't sound to me, like he was keen to do a 5th year, and maybe plans are already afoot to kill him off next year.

*potential small spoiler* Tennant also let slip that John Barrowman would also be present with Donna in this series. I don't know if this was widely known, but it was news to me *potential small spoiler over* I wouldn't read too much into Tennant's reaction. If he really hasn't officially been asked then it'd be bad form for him to say he wished he could stay. No matter what he had to be evasive. I think he more than likely has been at least asked if he's interested. As I said in a previous talkback, I think it would be a little rash of the BBC and the Doctor who production team not to inquire about it when they decided to replace a whole series with 4 specials to accomadate him.

I would hate to see adama go psycho next week, and starts killing random people in the fleet.

also:

gee, I sure hope that galactica doesn't transform and turns out to be starscream in disguise.

by Cedar_Room

05:06:49 PM
was that there would be no new series next year so to allow Tennant to do other things, therefore meaning he doesn't have to leave the show. We still get our helpings of The Doctor through the specials, but Tennant gets a year off from the punishing Who schedule and will then return again for series 5. If he was leaving during/after the specials there really is no point putting the show on hiatus - and given the money it generates I'm sure the BBC would just have gotten someone else in to play the Doctor if Tennant was leaving. I think, and I also really hope, that he will stay. Quite simply, at this moment in time, I can't see anyone doing it any better.

like Moffat, and indeed a few other writers have been playing up to the power of the Doctor. Its familiar with what they were trying to do with Sylvester McCoy, greater sway over peoples lives and choices over the fate of other beings (like here with the Doctor suggesting to "look him up"). But with this undercurrent of a dark side, a threat that he has the ability to obliterate a race if needed, again like the 7th Doctor not through direct violence but manipulation. With McCoy it was a planned thing to integrate the Doctor into timelord history and make him in essence a reincarnation of one of the 3 founding Timelords, references to "more than a time lord" were made and things were planned but held off as they weren't sure whether it would undermine the mystique of the character, also the series got shutdown. There seems to be more instances where they are playing up the power of the Doctor now, Mofatt must have a idea of season plotlines and the direction, he'll want to put his own stamp on things, perhaps this could be something he'd bring up again. Oh and with Mofatt now i'd say James Nesbits chances are even greater when the time comes to choose the next Doc.

Besides, if the Doctor knew how things were going to turn out & how to save her, wouldn't he have worked out things as well.... Love Moffat's storylines but he went for the dramatic scenes. Being overly critical yes but these anomalies jarred. I also watched the commentary but RTD is rarely critical about anything or admitting mistakes

Great, great episode, opened out the Doctor's mythology more and River is fantastic - though I'd agree with those who say leave her alone (for now). We built up some lovely drama with her - whenever new Who goes back to the well (multiple Slitheen stories, the two Oods) the second story never goes as well as the first. Leave River out of Who for now.

And I second the Jarv: NO FUCKING NESBITT! He's a limited actor and reasonably charismatic - but utterly wrong for the Doctor. And for those wanting Bill Nighy - you're still thinking Old Who. This is New Who, built to pander to HEAT readers as much as Whovians - you're more likely to get Brian McFadden than Bill Nighy. *shudder*

Forest of the dead was an exciting episode that upon second viewing you realise is full of plot holes big enough to contain the Tardis interior.

Exciting episode but in no way the second coming its being stated as, comparing it to TNG's TBOBW is simply madness, it was an exciting tale but contained a lot of self plagiarism from the new hear writer himself, if it floats your boat them good on ya I guess, me I was wondering why the Doc was taking so long to figure out stuff I myself had realised would happen in the first part, don't that make me cleverer than the Doc?

I still loved this episode though in context is it winner, overall it was cooler than it sucked.

... so am I the only one that thought they were *giving* us a few spoilers, as well as teasing others? River Song made it pretty plain that she knew *this* Doctor, that she recognized his face, and that it was "still early days" for him, meaning that she doesn't meet him for some time yet... which would make for major problems if they're planning to regenerate anytime soon. I know when asked DT always does the "oh, they haven't asked me yet" thing, but I've always gotten the impression that the job is his until he doesn't want it anymore, the upcoming gap year showing that the BBC will do whatever they need to do to keep number 10 around. I don't think there's any petition needed, cause I just don't think he's got plans to leave, and they'd be absolutely insane to force him out.

How many regenerations does the doc have anyway? I thought he had only a couple left-you would think that this would have been addressed as his perceived 'immortality' was under threat, or will they do a reset storyline where gives him more regenerations? Anyways it is very unlikely Tennant is staying in the part for any more than 1 or 2 years at the most....

I too noted the "still early days" comment in recognition of his youthful face, which means DT is going to be doing it for many more seasons to come in order to fulfil the prophecy, unless they fast forward 10 Whovian Years of course and use make-up to age him. That would suck!

He's definitely in for one more year because he's in the specials, and speaking personally I'd be flabbergasted if he didn't do series 5. All you mugs trying to rush him out the door so James Fucking Nesbitt or some other idiot can ruin the show need to belt up.

The Doc, like all timelords has twelve regenerations for 13 incarnations. They do have a 13th but its usually fatal. There are instances of TLs being given extra regens or stealing them/other bodies so theres a way around it if they get to 13 actors. As to Tennant, he's a fantastic actor and he'll want to push himself and avoid being typecast even if he loves the role dearly. I wouldn't be surprised if he did leave after the special, although i'd be overjoyed if he stayed on.

what the fuck is wrong with you people?

I'll try talking slowly this time, and you try not to get too distracted by all the shiny and colorful objects around you, and we just might get trough this. here goes:

1. I wrote "especially if it's written by moffat." 2. I clicked the "post talkback" button 3. page reloaded, and I saw the headline "Doctor Dan and Handsome 12th Go Nuts For New Showrunner Steven Moffatt’s DOCTOR WHO 30.9!!". thinking I've made a mistake,

4. I immediately made another post, saying "erm, MOFFATT, not moffat". correcting myself.

and finally,

5. IT WAS NOT A SPOILER! (well, at least I hope it wasn't. even if it turns out to be true, it was a guess based on 2 frames of youtube video)

if there's still something you don't quite understand, or if you still believe that I was making a "post call out" (whatever that may be) instead of correcting myself, please, by all means, feel free to kill yourself.

This episode was excellent. For me, it totally makes the whole Dr Who re-boot worthwhile, to have someone like Moffat come along and REALLY use the material to its fullest. And by that, I mean he simply loaded this episode up with clever cross-references and tantalising hints of things to come in the near and distant future(s) for the Doctor and co. My favourite episode of the entire re-boot so far, easily, (notwithstanding the rubber skull masks.)
That first review was perfect.

These last two episodes were fantastic, and really make me want Moffat to start helming the show NOW (no offense, RTD). Although Doctor Who fandom is quickly becoming as crazy as the Harry Potter fandom (the 'shippers were having conniption fits over River Song's debut), Mr. Moffat should ignore their insane keening and keep writing more involving, inventive, emotionally engaging episodes. Really, Tennant, Tate and Kingston were absolutely wonderful here - and this episode definitively established Donna as a true friend and helpmate to the Doctor rather than a love interest. I hope next week's episode doesn't pale in comparison, also because it is the stopgap before the return of Rose Tyler! AIIIIEEEE.
James Nesbitt would be a HIDEOUS Doctor.

And after Tennant, a ridiculous let-down. He's ugly and a mediocre actor - I don't care if he is Moffat's best bud. Ugh. Even David Morrissey would be better (and I don't like him much either -- too plain, too beefy). I hope to God they replace Tennant with someone good (Carlyle, Kevin McKidd, even Richard E. Grant at this juncture).

to paraphrase Michael Winner, "Calm down dear, it's just a talkback". As for recent Scottish new doctor suggestions (carlyle and McKidd) - I like the idea - perhaps letting them keep their accents! As a proud Scot I was slightly pissed off when Tennant came on the scene and started talking in an English accent! (although I've come to love the cheeky voice now!) But, Eccleston was allowed a northern English regional accent! why not a Scottish one? Is the UK not ready for a time-traveler north of the border!?! If Nesbitt gets the job soon and has an Irish accent that'll just be taking the piss! Sorry. Angry Scottish rant over!

Could we stop bandying about names to replace David Tennant? every week he puts his heart and soul in the role. Does anyone think he's not? What I wonder about is, where is the RTD lynch mob? you know, torchs, pitchforks, storming his castle. Now that he has stepped down as show runner, the time is NOW!!!! (As I said in an earlier post, I can't be part of the mob for 2 reasons, (1) I live in the USA, air fare too high and, more importantly, (2) I think RTD has done a bang up job. But, don't let me stop you all from storming his castle, enjoy.

There's always the chance that a creative choice was made because the production team thought the English accent suited Tennant's doctor (It's much the same accent as he used in RTD's BRILLIANT Casanova), but I choose to take the more cynical view! I think they felt that UK audiences would be put off, or wouldn't accept a Scottish Doctor! Which I believe is ridiculous. A few things were said about Eccleston's accent at first, and he was quoted as saying "I'm different from the other Doctors in that I'm northern. All the others spoke with this RP accent [received pronunciation] - maybe it was that that put me off. I think that it's good that we teach kids that people who speak like that can be heroic.". Everyone accepted Eccleston pretty quickly, and the accent wasn't a problem at all! (there was even that rather funny throwaway line in "Rose" - "lot's of planets have a north!") I think people would accept any accent from the UK. If there was ever an American Doctor though the BBC would get record levels of hate mail!

RTD has said in the past he asked Tennant to speak in the same accent as he did in Casanova because he didn't, following on from Ecclestone's very Northern Doctor, want the show to seem like it was "touring the regions".

Moffat delivers the goods once again. *sarcasm* Can you believe that a writer can do Doctor Who properly? Still including some humor, with only a mere few pop culture references, no overly-excessive societal rants, and make it feel like it could have held a spot in the Liz Sladen/Tom Baker/Ian Marter glory days? This two parter is definately right up there with Human Nature and Family of Blood, the Mysterious Planet, the Satan Pit, The Doctor Dances, and a handful of the other "top-notch" ep's. I realize every episode won't be of this caliber, but with Moffat at the helm, the show may be the bridge between the best of the old program and the new one that I've been looking for. For a two-parter, this one felt like it could have been a fleshed out 4-parter from back in the day. Shame that Russell could either blow the two-part finale with a good first ep, and a crappy last ep(like last season). Or maybe, he'll knock it out of the park like the Eccleston finale with the Daleks. Either way, Moffat's two-parter still delivered some humor, some tense moments, and a seriousness that has been largely absent. I look forward to season 5! Way to go Moff!

A fucking rich Welsh tramp as Doctor Who?

Seriously, what are some of you guys on? And we should be casting Who on TALENT, not on looks. And also bear in mind, shabby eccentrics are no longer de riguer in new Who. That shit got old when McCoy turned into McGann and Neil Gaiman got all mosit at the prospect of a gothic Shakespeare-loving Doctor who knows the world of faerie. Emo! EMO!

On the basis of how the Doctor looks, for the past three seasons he's been a bit of a snappy dresser - Jarvis Cocker with a decent makeover. So if we're ignoring talent but going for "think's he's a stylish mod type" for new Who? NICK MORAN.

He'd be shit, but he'd look goosd in a suit ;p

PLEASE don't make Nick Moran the new Doctor. I'd rather see Jason Statham do it. "Do I have 'cunt' written on my forehead? No? So fack off, Stavros, or whatever your fackin' name is. Oh, and my real name? The one River knew? Chev fackin Chelios. So fack off."

Actually, of all the Guy Ritchie crew, the new Doctor should be...
