This is just about the only night every year that MTV airs something remotely entertaining. Basically a holiday. And I dont even care that they dont play music videos 24/7 anymore. Lets face facts, a network airing only music vidoes all day would have terrible ratings nowadays. Why watch that when you can go on youtube and check out the videos YOU WANT TO WATCH, whenever you want?

At least Jimmy Fallon or Sarah Silverman aren't hosting it this year.

The only good one for an MTV crowd is Superbad. National Treasure 2?? Did ANYONE like that movie?

Then again, Juno may win this best picture because it is all "artsy" like MTV tries to be, and it has had commercial and award success. Therefore MTV will probably try to make themselves look more respectable by giving this the grand prize.

Technology has changed the market, and MTV were among the first and quickest to realize this change. With YouTube allowing for any music video YOU want (rather than waiting for the station to air the video) there is no way MTV could survive on that.

The rest of the TV industry have been too busy counting money to care about the little threat of the internet. Suddenly, when they tried to use it to fuck the writers, they realized it wasn't a little threat and we got our nice writers strike.

So, for all the shallow shit shows MTV airs, you have to give them respect for acting quick in the response to the rise of the YouTube generation.

Imascooby, I would agree, but...

...it's even easier to get a song (minus the video) online in any fashion - streaming, downloading, off your own iTunes collection - and you would think that radio would be a thing of the past. But, even despite that ease plus two satellite radio companies and the abundance of iPods, radio is doing just fine. People still listen to it. It hasn't taken a significant loss in listenership. So... though, like I said, I am inclined to side with you on the thought a music video network would be obsolete, I still think the public desire for it still exists.

Too bad there AREN'T really any networks that just play music videos all day long; at least not on basic cable. At least then we could test the theory.

...are you saying MTV was wise to ditch the music format because of youtube? You do realize they ditched music videos as their predominant programming back in, like, 1994, right? I don't think they did it in anticipation of the advent of youtube.

I think, if anything, the music videos on youtube and other populist video sites were simply a response to there not being any music videos on TV anymore. I mean, I'm sure even if there was, people would still want to laod their favorite videos, both popular and obscure. But I think the widespread popularity of the sites as a resource for seeing music videos wouldn't be what it is today if there were a network or two that played them like MTV and VH1 used to (as I was saying in my post above.)

Would it have killed them to throw in Knocked Up?
by Kizeesh

Yes because it was an unfunny piece of crap.

I don't get the love everyone has for Knocked Up, it's just a bunch of ill-used jokes from every other pregnancy movie and rom-com ever made with fairly unlikable characters and a schmaltzy bullshit ending.

The only funny part was the "Fuck you Hormones!" bit.

The MTV Awards has gotten lame

The Award show used to be funny in the 90's. Remember the lifetime achievement awards to Chewbacca, or Clint Howard, or the Ben Stiller spoof of being Tom Cruise's brother? Those were classic, now it is just a big promotion for the upcoming summer movies, rather then what was good last year. Once Transformers won for I think it was 'best summer movie not to come out yet' the show jumped the shark.
The YouTube theory is bullshit.

While watching videos on YouTube has its advantages, the crappy quality of picture and sound plus the fact that you have to use the search engine first and then have to look for an upload that doesn'T have the beginning or the end cut off, makes it pretty annoying. Plus: Turning on the TV in every room and just let it play in the background is much simpler than turning on the computer, logging in to the internet and use a search engine that most of the time don't gives you the results that you want.
I wish MTV would REALLY see the signs and return to what made them great. Not just playing music, but also having the balls to fuck the mainstream from time to time and come up with some creative and original artists instead of rappers who got shot 9 times.

The best sites to watch music videos at decent to pretty good quality (i.e., high resolutions and bandwidth) are music.yahoo.com and music.aol.com. I have no need for MTV anymore.

As for the Movie Awards, it really is just a two-hour promotion for upcoming, overhyped movies.

MTV jumped the shark when they got rid of 120 Minutes and even though I'm not a fan of rap - YO MTV Raps. At least with those two shows you were exposed to new or newer music that many of us in the Midwest never would have heard of. As for the Movie Awards, the Jack Black/Sarah Michelle Gellar was the last decent one, but when Chewbacca and then Clint Howard received their Lifetime Achievement Awards those were the last two great moments on the show. As for the music, it's cool that Coldplay will be playing, but the Pussycat Dolls? I'm not even sure where to begin to rip that decision, but I will say the decision to put them on the show is just an example of everythng that is wrong with MTV.

I agree with you, totally and completely. MTV hasn't been good in ages, and they've lost a massive chunk of their core audience, as they have simply grown up. Most of the kids who grew up watching MTV now only watch "the hills" -- why, in the name of god almighty, i don't know -- and that's it. MTV used to show their OWN shows on constant re-run loops, and now they're showing shows from OTHER NETWORKS on constant re-run loops. .i.e, "so you think you can dance," "america's top model," and "beauty and the geek." MTV bottomed out for good at the VMAs this year when they let britney perform. it wasn't like watching a trainwreck -- it was just sad.

I never meant that I supported MTV and what they are airing now. Frankly, I hate MTV and cannot stand any of the shows on it. I was merely saying that theres no way the ratings of an MTV that only showed music videos would compare to an MTV that shows Real world, the hills, and Tila Tequila all day. And they arent gonna be changin formats any time soon so the best thing we can do is not watch the network. And as far as teenage girls being able to see that POTC 3 was shit... yeah, that cant. Thats the type of film they eat up. My cousins are almost all teenage girls and they ALL love that movie.

Screw you for judging me!

Seriously, I took a week of vacation, one of those where you sit on the couch and take a vacation from "yourself," and Transformers was on Cinemax HD the whole week, and I watched it... a lot.

For me, it's become like Shawshank. If I'm flipping through the channels, and Transformers is on, I'll stop and watch it.

It seriously is Bay's best film (you can feel the Spielburg influence all over it), and hey, it's a solid three-star movie about fucking giant robots coming to earth where they set up shop for an even better sequel to come.

What's wrong with that?

Of course if the voting is from MTV fans, which must range in age from 12-15, the only age group that could possibly give a fuck about Tia Chiwawa, The Hills, and the drunks/sluts/douches of The Real World, then its not a suprise at all.

Mark "I Can't Believe Survivor Still Rakes In Cash" Burnett ruined this thing when he became producer. I remember the glory days of Jim Carrey showing up in fucked up hippie character, William Shatner singing the best movie themes, the '70s sitcom/monkey parodies of the best movie noms, Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller pitching Titanic II to Cameron...the list goes on. Indeed Dana Carvey is not only alive and well, but didn't look to age a day, at least in his Garth getup. I think Master Of Disguise, which was produced by Sandler's company, was intended to test the box office appeal of Carvey. And thats the end of that.

Speaking of the '90s SNL gang, I did chuckle at the Schnieder "You Can Do It" montage during Sandler's song. And Tom Cruise bowing before Adam Sandler. You may debate the quality of his comedies, but Sandler consistently rings the box office bell.

Mike Myers is not funny. Why do people keep hiring him? His skits were awful. There were a few highlights that have already been mentioned... Sandler, Rogen and Franco, the Get Smart Cast (sorry, they were funny). Oh, and sorry guys, but I have to say, I have never seen Johnny Depp look so smokin' hot! it was new and it was fresh and hip. It had a style all its own. It was cool. The only difference between it and the oscars were the comedy skits. It had a nerdy quality. They gave achievement awards to people like clint howard. Really cool. But now it is just another award show. This years generation award went to someone whos popularity is to me unfathomable. Adam Sandler. He has made. hundreds of millions out of making people laugh.I dont think he is funny at all. I have seen nearly all of his films. When he is on screen I want to give him a smack. Pretty much everything negative said here about MTV, I agree with. At this point, this is a show I watch by flipping the channel back to it while watching Fox cartoons. And that will give a funny bit or two. I mean, just seeing Wayne's World was awesome. And there were a few funny things. I did find Sandler's song entertaining. Not sure what Tom Cruise was doing there, but I'm almost starting to admire the fact that the man knows everyone thinks he's nuts and doesn't seem to care.

This award show used to actually be cool. They had a bunch of fun movie parodies. Plus, they had lots of original and fun award categories. Now they've stopped that almost all together. Best Fight, Best Kiss... sure, those are ok, but there were a lot of fun random ones that were just fun. Now, it's all lame movie-promoting comedy bits and unrelated songs. Dummies. I like that fact that Carell & Co's lame humor and attempts at Get Smart pimping got turned into an Office joke thanks to some yelling audience member.
one more... Screaming!

Can we please stop the damned screaming?? I realize this is a current trend on any awards or live shows, especially when teens are involved. Same you can see on American Idol. But it's getting ridiculous. Yes, they used to scream for the Beatles, but this award show is just 100% screaming for any recognizable person who appears on stage. Jeez, Depp can barely be forced to speak in public. Shut up and let him. All jokes are drowned out by "Oh my God! It's that person I've seen on TV! AAAGGHHHHHHH!"

he received that same award last year so thats probably why he presented it to sandler. or maybe it was the year before, either way the segment was on the M:I 3 dvd so it was recent enough.

And MTV is a marketing whores wet dream. For gods sake they cut Pink Floyds reuniting and playing Comfortably Numb in half for a fucking Taco Bell commercial. Last Live Aid I think it was. Thats not Music TV. Its fucking TACO BELL TV.

tom cruise got it in 2005. this year's host got it last year. the only reason he gave it to sandler was because they are good friends. nuff' said.

I wouldn't call myself an RDJ fanboy, but he really was the reason why Iron Man was great. The wit that he brought to Stark was absolutely brilliant.

Return of Wayne's world. Tropic Thunder is going to be decent. I like the feel of Black, Stiller and Downey on screen. I hate the jump cuts to reactions from Paris.

They should have had a stand up ripping these guys apart like Silverman did. Oh well. I like that it was movie promotions for the summer and tent pole movies, the show felt and looked great with all the big stars coming out for it. I just thought now they did not show the paradee movies like last year. Another oh well since they looked like crap this year anyway online.

LiL Wayne Should Have Opened The Show With Lollipop!!!

Cold Play and The Pussycat Dolls were horrible!!! Cold Play usually good song writers, have so far delivered two very bad songs off of their new album, performing one of the two tunes on the MTV Movie Awards, but, whether they have good material or not, I have noticed that they suck live. The Pussycat Dolls were also terrible, the song they performed sucked and you could predict their performance, there was nothing new here, just the same old tired yoga inspired dance moves. They have been doing this same lame act since they first debuted several years ago???

Finally, Lil Wayne has the hottest song in the country and should have opened up the show, instead we were force fed product placement in the form of Cold Play and The Pussycat Dolls???

except Big daddy which was sweet as was mr deeds. The first sandler film that was Happy madison. i thought it was funny in goofy kind of way. silly movie. Then I saw the wedding singer, I had heard all the hype and So I decided to give it a try. Not once did I laugh at the wedding singer. Then eventually I saw the waterboy. The fact that this is even called a comedy is shocking. I saw recently enough, little nicky on tv. Utterly terrible and Then I saw big daddy, sweet and Charming and I saw mister Deeds. Which sandler was good in. but he was upstaged by a terrific John Turturro. I havent watch a sandler film since and I dont intend either. I agree with the man in the LA times who put the demise of comedy at sandlers door. Chuck and larry should re-titled Adam Sandler: I now pronouce your career dead and buried.

I've loved RDJ since I was a child when I saw Weird Science. He's always been gorgeous. I was turned off by the drug thing in the 90s but he's back baby! I would go to sleep with his cock in my mouth and wake up with his cock in my mouth.

sad that theyre still sucking up to JUNO as much as they are...im waiting for the day when hollywood acknowledges that diablo cody is a big time plaigiarist...its bad enuf when hollywood is remaking everything from 20 yrs ago....but its really low to rip off a korean film of the same name and story and call it an "original screenplay".....at least the right film won best movie, go transformers.....btw coldplays song was great, classic coldplay, loved it

i would not expect an apparent idiot like you to appreciate what an awesome comic actor that adam sandler is..waterboy was a hilarious movie, so was little nicky, and chuck and larry, 50 first dates, which brought back drew barrymore in one of his movies since wedding singer....even eight crazy nights , which has sandler animated... zohan just continues the great adam sandler tradition of funny movies...

no one knows or cares who lil wayne is....at least coldplay is an established band that actually puts words in their songs that actually make sense....but i guess songs with words are not interesting to the stupid, mindless, brain dead of this time in our world....if mtv actually played videos from groups that mattered, it would go off the air because its not what the retards that u represent with that stupid comment want to see.....people like u like "songs" that repeat the same 2 or 3 words over and over, so ur head dont explode or u might become literate , god forbid..

I have never even heard of the korean film that is supposedly based if at all. I have not seen Juno. Films like Juno and knocked up, sound all hard, the pregnant teenager and the woman who get preggers after a one night stand. The both sound hard edged, but they are both hollywood. Both women agonize about what to do. but we all know they are going to do what hollywood wants. which is to bring up the children within a fmaily setting.
Then are a lot of idiots

Lil Wayne Has Been Around Longer Than Coldplay!!!

I love Warning Sign by Coldplay and several other songs like Yellow, but everytime I have seen them live on an award show, they sucked...like on the Grammys and now this, and plus at least one other time than that, I think on the MTV Video Awards.

I just knew that they would blow everybody away the first time, and they were awful, so I figured, Hey, Everybody has an off night, right? Well, the second time I saw them...they sucked yet again, and now this latest performance??? Look, they had their chance, and just because the lead singer is married to Gwyneth Paltrow shouldn't gain him a pass card. A bad performance, is a bad performance.

At least Lil Wayne would have had people in the audience out of their seats and dancing and a dozen or so strippers on the stage, but no, we got Coldplay trying to pretend to be the Beatles during their Sergeant Pepper days...just like The Killers on their last album or Panic At The Disco on their last album. Well, none of those bands have earned the right to try and be like the Beatles or even pretend to be!!! Unlike them, Lil Wayne is just trying to be Lil Wayne, making songs to get your girlfriend hot and on the dance floor, so you can more easily get her into bed later.

It was a small gig. They really arent that good. They are a very bland band. I blame Travis. Frans Ferdinand are very good live band and they have some very good songs. They put a lot of effort in their perfomance. Cold play are just boring.

It was so awful. Everytime a band played mtv would a slap a sign on the tv saying we cannot show you the performance due to the fact we cannot endorse corporate sponsorhip or they would go to a VJ who would talk with the band playing in the back ground. Mtv Europe was much better and its undoubted star was Ray cokes. Cokes was a genius. inspired, and unpredictable. and they had a great Movie show. Then Mtv Europe spread out and we got MTV UK/Ireland.It launched Russell Brand. But he got fired after 9/11. But MTV in the US took over the running of MTV Europe. And all the craziness went out the window. Now its just utter blandness.
