Spielberg has become a better film maker when sticks to the serious and biographical. His recent attempts at fantasy or sci fi with the exception of A.I. which I enjoyed have been tepid at best. War of Worlds was meh. Indy 4 looks fucking terrible. The about Lincoln though will more then likely be pretty good.

I hope this is about that big statue of Lincoln in Washington DC coming to life and smashing the system! Or maybe Lincoln will be the name of a lovable dog who somehow unites a husband and wife with drooling and an inner monologue voice over for the dog performed by that guy from Transformers! Remember that movie? The best part was when that giant robot did that thing!

Have you seen the new version of Raiders with Mutt Williams digitally inserted into it? It's just like that funny bit in Back To The Future where Michael J Fox has to make sure he is conceived...and then he goes back in time to fight Abe Lincoln and right at the end we see the statue of Abe in Washington grow a beard, because it was Mutt who taught him the value of life and beards.

You wouldn't buy a Lincoln from Lincoln? He's called "honest Abe", fer cryin' out loud!

As for slippery weasel voice, you gotta be thinking of someone else man... Maybe you're getting that low manly voice confused with Steve Buscemi or something. Actually, I'd definitely pay to see him as Abe.

Have they no respect for the dead? I suppose Hillary-loving Spielberg will give into the pressure of the political correctness police and have Lincoln killed by a white man, when really we all know he was assassinated by Al Qaeda. Oh, and as for the people lambasting Liam Neeson for being British or having a British accent... he is neither British, nor does he have a British accent (Irish people generally don't).

His last few genre efforts, Minority Report, War of the Worlds, AI, and now it's looking like Indiana Jones were all underwhelming offers if still technically impressive. But Munich is easily one of the best films ever made, a masterpiece in almost every respect and hopefully the day will come when it's widely recognized as such. So when I see him taking on a character like Lincoln it's a reason to celebrate, especially with an actor like Liam Neeson, who hasn't been giving nearly enough to do to show his talent since Kinsey.

In recent years Spielberg has been constantly juggling half-a-dozen major projects all at once. But it doesn't seem to be a method for creating huge successful classics like his early movies. Just look at his IMDB entry to see how many "in production" titles are currently listed for him.

I mean is it gonna be more a movie about the Civil War or the assassination of Lincoln? I hope the assassination. I recvently saw a doc on the assassination of Lincoln and it was so compelling. Mostly how John Wilkes Booth and the rest of the conspirators were gonna kidnap Lincoln. How it all comes about and the conclusion was fascinating.

And looking upon African slavery from the same stand-point, as held by those noble framers of our Constitution, I for one, have ever considered it, one of the greatest blessings (both for themselves and us) that God ever bestowed upon a favored nation." - Is he saying that having slaves is a blessing?

That'd be badass if it was a film showing how an old-school Prez went to war and fought one.

by Smoke Monster Loves Kate
May 12th, 2008

that's boring.

i wanna see a president BEING THE PRESIDENT, making impossible decisions, then seeing the hard-hitting unpredictable consequences of those decisions, and then the subsequent effects on the Prez as he tries to navigate this storm (civil war, slavery, etc.)

we haven't been witness to a president worth a damn thing in a long time.

and it should certainly get into the nitty gritty behind-the-scenes of his decisions. don't turn it into some Obama-esque thing where he just gives vague speeches every so often.

by SabineWringer

Just to give you the souce and the basic information – that's what Mr. Spielberg told me doing an interview with him for the German Newsmagazine FOCUS: 1. He's going to shoot in September "Tintin". His answer to my question if that's not depending on a possible actors' strike: "No, that has nothing to do with that. It's an animation film, it's motion capture. 2. He said Peter Jackson is going to shoot the second movie in january. 3. By then he wants to start shooting "Lincoln", trying to get the movie out in late 2009, because that's the year of Lincoln's 200. birthday. 4. "The Chicago 7" may be following, right now the script is not ready yet. It's been a long interview (1 hour/one-on-one, two weeks ago at his office at Amblin), but these are the only news concerning his next projects nice guy, by the way

As well liked as Neeson is, I still consider him underrated. The most boringest dullest talkbacker in the history of AIC. What a tool. Seriously Paz, Stop talking to me, your a fucking idiot and everyone knows it.

great, now you made me look like a troll infront of senior speilbergo. Thanks a lot.

man it must suck having such a small penis. How's that working for you? Don't have the surgery dude, technology just isn't up to scratch no matter how hard you want to believe

I'm seriously thinking of paying Harry to wipe your ability clean from AIC. honestly dude, you're as funny as a fat guys fart in an over crowded elevator. Why do you jump onto me like a fly on a freshly laid turd every time i say something here?

homewrecker may have been onto something when he was saying you were on staff. seriously dude, you're the most hated talkbacker in absolute years of AIC yet still you are here persisting with your boring BORING presence.

man you are a dull DULL talkbacker. you know you are too. do us all a favour, change your name and start fresh.

here's an idea. die poof.

nahh thats a bit rough. you dont need to die, that would mean your other id names will stop coming in to praise you. thats always a good laugh. specially when it's so blatantly obvious it's you. oh yeah, i may not post here often, but im still read like tuesday night bible class. you are a moron.

HARRY sack this greasy A- hole. it's time. he really does suck the big donkey. im a little fed up... not that you care but dude..... i'm loyal and i'm well behaved.

do something with your life Paz. sure you may consider yourslf the police voice of hope towards AIC trolls... but dude, you're actually the biggest AIC troll and have been for YEARS.

enough is enough dude. get the hell out of my face.

Daniel Day-Lewis as Lincoln!

I'm not going to knock Neeson, because he's incredible...but Day-Lewis is a far superior actor and hands down the best living actor. This would be a great role for him to dissolve into.... along with the fact that he could team up with Spielberg. Plus, Lewis actually looks a lot like Lincoln, unlike Neeson. Ever since I've heard of this project I've only pictured Day-Lewis in the role. Spielberg is still incredible but I'd like to see him work with some better actors and course correct him back to being one of the best.

Hmmm... I don't know, it might be because of your idiotic other posts, such as:

"do you creationist/scientist types want your minds blown? The Earth is growing (all continents fit together on a smaller globe) the grand canyon is not erosion, but an opening, which closes ona deflated planet. The oceans form through steaming of the interior and also precipitation not only from evaportation (minimal) but from materials aquired from the sun as we tumble. Gravity has nothig to do with the planets 'pull' but from inertia as we spin and grow in all directions. The moon is growing too - thats what all that grey stuff is in amounst the white - new land. Impact craters are not impact craters at all but geological formed naturally. God is not real, only the existance of the living universe and all the components which make it up. and the best thing of all? the earth is a thin bubble - housing an interior forming star!" (http://tinyurl.com/6m7res)

Let me get this straight: you actually believe zfisk/homewrecker's theory about me being on AICN:s payroll and having countless user IDs, yet you want AICN, my "employer", to fire me?

It was an obvious, but not inspired choice. Bryan Cox would have been inspired. This is kind of the same thing.. but I like the idea of Neeson more in this role because like Aslan, he will do a fine job, but I think the role of Lincoln needs to be played by a man who can be calm, evenhanded, and strong. That fits Neeson perfectly. All hell was breaking out around Lincoln, and he was kind of the calm in the middle of the storm. I think that Neeson is a great choice.

Indy 4

May 12th, 2008
11:01:32 AM
The new trailer looks worse than the last one (especially if you watched the first). Cutting out the last bit of dialogue when they are in the jeep shows how worried they are about certain scenes and how they playing in the trailers. And whether you agree or not about this film (Indy 4) being any good...What is the deal with the major lighting inconsistencies (why has Kaminski put that weird bright sheen over that motorcycle scene with Indy and Shia?) I'm telling you Spielberg either shouldn't have pushed to make this film or they should have made it years ago right after Crusade. Its the wrong script, the wrong DP in my humble opinion and much of the acting appears to be scary bad. After seeing Iron Man (after all the overrated buzz) which I found very disappointing, and having watched Speed Racer (another travesty - Wachowski's should be doing a 2D animated Doc Frankenstein instead of their current crap)...It is beginning to look like the only hope we can have for the summer is Wall E and Dark Knight. The Spielberg film I am ironically most looking forward to is Tintin against my better judgement. Something tells me he might actually pull that film off even though I think it should have been 2D instead of mo-cap. But Zemeckis made leaps and bounds that technology with Beowulf coming from the ass that was Polar Express...And I think Jackson and SS together makes for a decent combo. But Lincoln will probably be like Amistad and most of Spielberg's movies lately...One really amazing sequence (i.e. normandy scene in SPR, slave ship scene in Amistad etc) in an otherwise flawed movie. None of Spielberg's recent films has worked as a whole for me. The last truly great Spielberg film was Schindler's List. His last truly great popcorn film was probably Jurassic Park.

My problem with Kaminski's cinematography is it all always comes out looking like everything has been way too color corrected. Minority's photography worked for me too and Schindler is one of the best shot films I have ever seen.
Color corrected
by Samuel Fulmer
May 12th, 2008
11:16:30 AM
totally agree. Of course it's always hard to tell weather Kaminski or Spielberg is to blame. I think maybe after Kubrick's death, Spielber took Kubrick's penchant for color correction to the extreme, and his films mostly have that look where all the color has been sucked out of them. I think it worked for films like Minority Report and Private Ryan, but not for the other films of the Kaminski/Spielberg collaboration. It's almost like the cinematography makes the films look cheap or fake.

People can argue about the overall merit of the films these two did together, but I think most would agree that they gave us some of the best cinematography of the past 25 years: Body Double, Casualties of War, Raising Cain, Carlito's Way, Mission:Impossible, Snake Eyes, Mission to Mars.

I wasn't saying that they had done color correction I was trying to say that Kaminski shooting style makes it look like a lot of color correction has been done. And I would also add that filmmakers are going to have to be careful about going too crazy with the color correction particularly on darkly lit or night scenes from now on in the age of bluray and hd-dvd. Just recently became a proud owner of both technologies and I can tell you that it makes a huge difference on the picture quality of the film. 300 on hd-dvd for example looked pretty awful because of oversaturation.

That being said, MUNICH was terrific, although it would be amazing to see a 'serious' Spielberg film that didn't rely on shocking violence to get you into a 'serious' mood. I don't understand all the love for that movie? Maybe because I saw it too close to Schindlers list. I just thought it was terrible. Daniel Craig and Eric Bana (a Comedian mind you, has never once proven himself as a dramatic actor I don't know why he keeps getting those parts) are both jews? The movie was boring and didn't go anywhere. Eric Bana has about the emotional depth of a Carlos Mencia skit. Plus I had also seen One Day in September within the past year, which was a much better movie. Sometimes it pays to know less about the events I guess?

I thought it was kind of average. The thriller aspect of it worked, but I felt that the more drama oriented scenes fell flat (especially that pretentious sex scene at the end). i used to love his movies, until i realized what a sellout spielberg is. i love how he goes on a rant about the chinese should 'end the continuing human suffering there...' the communist regime in china will soon topple, without the aid of the mighty spielberg. i also LOVE how spielberg completely IGNORES the APARTHEID in PALESTINE right now. i guess spielberg does not consider 'continuing human suffering' for the Palesinean people. Bring PEACE to PALESTINE, and equality for ALL living there, and the world will be a better place. Spielberg would be better off listening to these brave RABBIS, than listening to his rich elite media partners. http://www.nkusa.org/ bring PEACE to PALESTINE

I don't know what happened to that. I can't remember who was attached to direct, but Harrison Ford was supposed to star in it. As most of you might know...Mr. Spielberg was chomping at the bit to direct a Bond film. He did Raiders instead. I wonder now that Bond is back in a more elite "light" would he still want to direct one. I am not at all interested in TinTin or the Chicago protest film or Lincoln...but, I would be dead keen on seeing what he could do on a Bond film! Since he worked with Daniel Craig on Munich...I think the rapport would be terrific. Then after he could direct the Ghost on the Shell he has in his pocket. The time is right for the heavy hitting anime to go toe to toe with the Transformers & Iron Man and beat James Cameron to the punch. I wanna see Spielberg direct the hell of of something to re-establish himself as the best director out there...

In my village everyone knows Aberaham Lincolns. It is a great thing that you do in honouring this man with a film. Like Forrest Gump he knew that a black man should not be forced into slavery, unlike Forest Gump, he was shot behind the ear. In my village we celebrate Abereham Day every year. everyone dresses up in beards, top hats, and smoke cigars and drinks brandy. I hope when the film comes out Mr Lincolns family will not ruin everything by protesting as did the family of Dan Shanks.

Spielberg did direct Ford in ET... Although his part was cut from the final film... only Ford's hand is seen when he puts it on Henry Thomas' shoulder after Elliot releases all of the frogs in biology class. Or that is how the rumour goes. You are right, it would be nice to see Ford in a non Indy Spielberg film... Other than Wier, Ford does his best work with the beard.

Sorry but Liam is hoplessly chained to his accent. Im not sure the world is ready for Lincoln in a kilt.

the ONLY time he managed to distance himself from his own voice was "next of kin" only the issue there is that the stereo-typical 'hillbilly' accent in the US is a product of Irish and Scottish immigration, so it wasn't exactly a stretch for him.

came out that way. And as for Lincoln, I don't know if I want Boothe to even be in the movie at all. Sure it's a cool dramatic moment but I want this movie to be about Lincoln's life and not his death. I do realize that most people will immediatly bush Steven for leaving that aspect out (if he did it). They simply would not be satisfied because that's what they would be expecting. But it would only show their shallowness not the filmmaker's. And by the way, I admit that this is not necessarily the only (or best) way to go about this. Just you a thought, you know?

I agree that Lincoln's death overshadows a lot of his life. He's a tragic figure in one way and a phenomenal success in other ways. Lincoln's assasination is one of the most oft-depicted events of American history in television and film. I like what you're saying here, that to exclude it really does shift the focus to a more thoughtful examination of his life. I would compromise that by starting with his assasination and moving forward with a flashback of his career and successes. Its like "Yes, we all know he was killed, but look at what a great life he led..." But overall, I think a positive-themed movie about this extraordinary individual is the most appropriate tribute to the man. Good points. Thats 2 things we agree on. Fucking a...

We build up with the story about how Lincoln and Booth are like opposite sides of the same coin or whatever, and lead to their showdown. And then we get a bunch of images that explain to the audience how Booth shot Lincoln and tell us who won the war. With a twist like that it'll make millions!

Speilberg stayed very true to the Kubrickian vision of the story in A.I. Anyone who thinks it has a tacked-on feel-good ending is missing the point. It's a brutal, sad, ending. This poor sentient being, who will never be 'human' ends up trapped in his own delusions. The A.I's at the end take pity on the little robot and allow him one last sweet memory... One he will re-live over and over, clinging to like we cling to the idea of God. To me, that fate is as horrible as being trapped in the ice for eons. A.I. is a much deeper film than people give it credit for. Look beneath the surface, it's a very brutal examination of why artificial intelligence will never be human.

leave in how "The Great Emancipator" was originally dead-set against the idea of abolition of slavery; how he pointedly stumped against the possibility in early debates? How he investigated creating a new colony for freed slaves once the Civil War was over ("Your race suffers, greatly, many of them, by living among us, while ours suffers from your presence" John Franklin: "From Slavery to Freedom" NY 1967. Richard Zacks: "Underground Education" NY 1997)? How the noble Emancipation Proclimation applied only to slaves in the Confederacy (which most of those states chose to ignore) and not the slave-holding states of the Union (Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri)? Enough muckraking. Instead of Liam Neeson, it should be that guy from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.

My two cents. I thought the relationship between the Mom and the boy robot was borderline creepy. I thought the mom completely overacted her scenes. The robots getting destroyed in the arena were goofy as was the concept of the monster truck ralley robot demolition itself. Worst of all was the "Ask Einstein" thing at the Universal City Walk looking place. And oh yeah, Jude Law's headclick instant music thing was funny once NOT the five times we got beaten over the head with it in the movie. The more Kubrick inspired scenes stuck out like a sore thumb vs. The Beard's Disney style. The scene where Haley's robot boy finds the lab with the perfectly symmetrical lined up boxes of robots identitical to him and then one of the boxes starts to rock and Haley flees, that's pure Kubrick, baby. The third act AI's were visionary. Spielberg totally succeeded here at updating his Close Encounter's future vision in an inventive, visually creative and fresh way.
