This reminds me of when I had a subscription to the hollywood reporter, because, as legend has it, "you have to read the trades". Anyway, every issue there was at least a dozen news articles in there about bad ideas getting sold or put in preproduction or whatever. Once I realized that half the info in the trades is obsolete by the next day or never materializes as a film, I cancelled my subscription. At least this is satire of the crap that's being sold.

Three things you can always count on for AICN: (1) If a female is involved in an article, there is always a visual image whether it's a photo or a vid (although, to be fair, the vid was the point of this article). I think, and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, that the $500,000 is the option price and the mill is the full price. Meaning that the studio/financers pay the writer the first figure for the option of producing their work (these deals usually expire if the work goes unproduced for a certain period of time and similar situations happen to directors, actors, etc. like the cast of Justice League) The second figure is the full amount that the writer is paid if the work goes into production. I think.

Hey fellow AICN talkbackers. I've been a lurker and an occasional poster on this site for the better part of, I don't know, I can't remember. I'm an Alaskan, 22 years of age, so I'm at that point where I feel this metaphorical noose tightening around my neck. Like if I don't do something now, take that first step, it's over. That's why I'm moving to California this June, Los Angeles. I read my first screenplay how-to at 17 and, after about seven pages, threw it down and just started writing. I love writing and I love movies. In my small town, it's a passion I almost feel I have to be ashamed of, or at least weird about. I'm always hesitant to tell folks about my plans to either crash and burn or find some hope of a writing career in California. I'm no stranger to the sideways stare when I do reveal that info. I'm also no stranger to snarky Californians who don't like the idea of someone moving to their state with 'visions of fame and fortune'. Believe me, I have no illusions about this undertaking and, if I wanted fame and fortune, I would be anything but a screenwriter. I can't help what I believe to be a calling, nor would I attempt to quell it. That said, my plans for the move are coming together, all I need is some advice, perhaps from folks who have been in similar positions, about what to do when I get there. Mainly how do I go about getting representation that way, while I work, someone can try to sell the screenplays I have written and I can work on more. Also, seeing previews for things like "What Happens in Vegas", and knowing that what I have written or can write would be a far stretch more imaginative than that, gives me great hope for what I know will be a difficult task.

Just so you guys know, a 500k against a mil agreement is not an option agreement. The studio has succesfully and fully purchased the script and now have complete rights over it. The stipulation of the contract being that the writers recieve an additional stipend when the film goes to production. But there will be no revolving window for the studio on this deal. That script is now locked to that company. This is not a ridiculously common practice, usually used when buying scripts that are competing with current projects. The script is purchased with a contract promising more money, meaning another studio can't get there hands on it without first buying it from them and buying out the contract as well. Their $500k script will cost anyone else a million just to get their hands on it.

Inglorious Jedi first: Yes, I've finished 4 scripts. Not much, and I've heard you should have more before approaching an agent, but who knows, by then the same concepts/ideas for earlier works could already be in use. But, growing up a huge scifi fan (including one who now never misses an episode of BSG), I've found a strange pull toward the drama genre when writing. Bacci40: I'll definitely take your advice about the hot girlfriend. But, we Alaskans are pretty pale from spending most the year in darkness, but now that it's hot and sunny out, I'll work on my tan and be looking like a Greek god by the time I arrive.
