There's an interesting article over at Variety about television series being issued on DVD without their original scores intact.

Seems a bevy of issues has convoluted rights to the music used in certain series; the studios are taking a 'better safe than sorry' approach and replacing music on the DVD issuance of those series.

Titles that have already been retooled include WKRP IN CINCINNATI and NORTHERN EXPOSURE (songs, in their case), and...more problematically...the dramatic underscore for seasons of THE FUGITIVE.

This practice will almost certainly be jarring to die hard collectors and purist, and The Powers That Be are taking hits for failing to indicate these significant alterations on DVD packaging. The buyers have a right to know.
